Kansas City Monarchs News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A former star at Maryland is the first batter to sign with the Kansas City Monarchs for 2025.
The four-time league champions have signed infielder Maxwell Costes for the upcoming season, the team announced Wednesday.
Costes, 25, hit 40 home runs over four years with the Terrapins from 2019 to 2022, ranking second in school history. The 2019 Big Ten Freshman of the Year earned a 1.018 OPS in his collegiate career.
The Baltimore native signed with his hometown Orioles for 2022, his first of three seasons with their organization. Costes owns a .349 on-base percentage in his Minor League career, reaching as high as Double-A in 2023.
"Maxwell can be a great player for us," Monarchs manager Joe Calfapietra said. "He has some power, is flexible in the field, and is a high-character guy. We're looking forward to seeing what he can do for us."
Most of Costes' experience comes in the infield, but he's also played corner outfield at the pro level.
He sports a solid 18% strikeout rate for his pro career. That's an important metric for a Monarchs lineup that recorded the second-fewest strikeouts in the American Association a year ago.
Costes is the second player the Monarchs have signed for the upcoming season. Right-hander Jeff Hakanson, who served as the Monarchs' closer for the 2024 stretch run, inked a deal with the team on November 22.
The Monarchs begin their 2025 season on May 9 from Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas. Fans can find tickets and the team's full schedule at MonarchsBaseball.com.
