Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-A pair of former Waterloo Black Hawks currently playing professional hockey in Europe will skate for the United States this weekend in the 2009 Deutschland Cup tournament.
Mike Radja and Tim Hambly were chosen for the United States Men's Select team, which will compete at the round-robin event in Munich Friday through Sunday. Of the 22 players on the United States roster, 20 are members of elite professional teams in European leagues. The Deutschland Cup has been held every year since 1990, with Team USA winning the event twice (2003 and 2004).
Radja was Black Hawk forward for two seasons, helping Waterloo to an Eastern Division championship in 2002-2003 and the Clark Cup title in 2003-2004. In 111 USHL regular season games, he scored 34 goals with 39 assists. During the 2004 Clark Cup championship series against the Tri City Storm, Radja scored a goal in all three Black Hawks wins. After four seasons at the University of New Hampshire, he spent last year with the Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League and is currently on the roster for TPS Turku of Finland.
Hambly was a Black Hawk defenseman briefly in 2000-2001. The Minnesota high school hockey star appeared in 17 Waterloo games with a goal and eight assists before moving on to the University of Minnesota-Duluth. A teammate of Radja's last year in Rockford, 2008-2009 was Hambly's fourth season in the American minor leagues. During the offseason, he signed with Ingolstadt of the German Elite League.
Other former Black Hawks who have appeared in the Deutschland Cup include Jason Blake, Mark Eaton, Chris Ferraro, Peter Ferraro, John Gruden, and Andy Roach.
The 2009 U.S. Men's Select team will face Germany Friday, Switzerland Saturday, and Slovakia Sunday.
