Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Former Charleston Swamp Foxes' lineman Tavares Jurineack was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins late last week.

The 6-2, 276-pound defensive tackle is the first of several Swamp Foxes' to receive looks from scouts in both the NFL and AFL since the conclusion of the 2003 season.

Jurineack played the last three years (2000-02) at the University of South Florida after red shirting in 1999. In those three seasons, he compiled 148 tackles, including 32 for loss. In 2002, he posted a career-high 65 tackles, including 18 for loss, five sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Jurineack and his former South Florida teammate Chris Daley joined the Swamp Foxes' squad during Charleston's off-week in mid-May. He made his first of five appearances in the home win over divisional rival, the Norfolk Nighthawks on June 7.

In five games with the Foxes, Jurineack tallied three and a half tackles, including a pair of solo stops, playing mostly as a defensive specialist along the front line. He also tallied one and a half tackle for loss and made a heads up play in the road win over Cape Fear, intercepting a pass that was batted up in the air by teammate Mike Chandler.

Swamp Foxes' head coach Rik Richards was not surprised by the move by the Dolphins to sign Jurineack.

"Tavares was a lineman we were fortunate to bring in midway through the season to sure up our front three," said Richards. "He was originally on the NFL's draft board and used his time in Charleston to spring board back into the NFL. He has the size, the skill, and the knowledge to stick there in Miami."

To make room on the roster for the 6-2, 276-pound defensive tackle, the Dolphins placed defensive tackle Davern Williams on injured reserve. Williams had surgery to stabilize a labral tear in his left shoulder and is ineligible to return to the team during the 2003 season.

Wearing number 97 on the preseason roster, Jurineack is one of nine defensive tackles currently listed on the Dolphins roster. He appeared in the Dolphins' most-recent preseason game, a one-point 20-19 loss to the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is expected to see more playing time this week as Miami travels to in-state rival, the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 15 at 7:30 pm.
