Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â Offensive/defensive lineman Larrell Johnson was signed by the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League on Monday afternoon, the team announced today.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Johnson is the fifth Swamp Fox from 2003 to be signed by an AFL team. He joins Michael Brown (Orlando Predators), Rob Bironas (Carolina Cobras), Antionne Scott (Arizona Rattlers), and Demont Smith (Grand Rapids Rampage) who have already inked deals for 2004.
Johnson played in all 16 games for the Swamp Foxes during the 2003 season. Starting as a defensive tackle, he tallied 11 total tackles, including eight solo stops. He also corralled opposing quarterbacks for a pair of sacks with 14 yards in losses, tying him for third on the team in that category. The 6-1, 290-pound Johnson also recorded three quarterback hurries and tallied one and a half tackles for loss.
Late in the season, though, the Swamp Foxes decided to take full advantage of the true offensive lineman. Johnson was inserted as the Foxes' offensive specialist, meaning he only had to play one-way during a game.
The Swamp Foxes only allowed 13 total sacks last season, ranking eighth in the af2 in that category. Ten of the 13 opponent sacks occurred during the first 11 games when Johnson was playing two-way. However, that nearly one per game average was cut in half during the final five contests in which Johnson was offensive specialist as Charleston surrendered only three sacks over the final five games of the season.
Recruited to the University of South Carolina as a defensive tackle, Johnson started on defense during his freshman year. He recorded 15 tackles before moving to offense as a center. After the move, he started in three-consecutive seasons at the center position, playing in a pair of Outback Bowls for the Gamecocks.
In both 2000 and 2001, Johnson was named All-Southeastern Conference for the Gamecocks as an offensive lineman.
