Bay Area Panthers News Release
The Panthers continue to fortify their defense with the signing of former East Carolina linebacker Bruce Bivens.
"Bruce is physical and can run sideline to sideline," said Head Coach and General Manager Darren Arbet." He can rush the passer and when I see him on film-he just jumps off the screen. Bruce is a very good football player and I'm excited to see what he can do in the IFL."
As a senior in 2021, Bivens led the Pirates in tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He was a key player in the program's renaissance as the Pirates secured a bowl bid and the team's first winning season since 2014.
Bivens showed persistence and patience in college, working with four different position coaches, playing both the "Mike" and "Will" linebacker spots. He also displayed loyalty as the only member of his recruiting class to stay with the program over the five years.
Bivens told 247 Sports: "What made me want to stay was, it was a gut feeling. I've always been the type of person to stick things out when stuff gets tough. When you have that goal in mind, that vision in mind, why not stick to it? Because it can always work out in your favor if you work for what you want."
The Houston native was named Associated Press First-Team Class 6A All-State as a senior linebacker and team captain at Davis High School. Bivens was a three-year varsity starter who posted freakish combine numbers- 4.42 in the 40-yard dash, squatted 505 pounds and reached a 41" vertical jump.
