Former Defenseman Nate Schmidt Debuts in the NHL

FARGO, ND- Former Fargo Force defenseman Nate Schmidt signed a two-year entry-level contract as a free agent in April with the Washington Capitals in the NHL and played his first regular season game Saturday night in Washington against the Colorado Avalanche after being called up on Friday, Oct. 11. Schmidt is the first former player to debut in the NHL for the Fargo Force.

Schmidt wore number 88 and saw 14:51 minutes of ice time versus the Avalanche in a 5-1 loss, finishing with a -1 plus/minus rating and taking 3 shots. The defenseman had played in one game thus far in the AHL with the Hershey Bears, affiliate team of the Washington Capitals, registering one goal in that game.

Following the 2012-13 season, he chose to forgo his senior year to turn pro. He played in 96 games for the University of Minnesota during his 3 year stint for the Gophers, tallying 74 points with 12 goals and 62 assists. At the completion of the 2012-13 season, where Schmidt had 32 points (9 goals, 23 assists) with a plus/minus rating of +15, he was named to the All-WCHA First Team after leading the league in scoring by a defenseman. He also finished the season ranked tied for third in scoring among all defensemen in the NCAA this year.

Prior to his college career with the Gophers, Schmidt played one year for the Fargo Force during the 2009-10 season. He played in 57 games where he led defenseman in scoring with 37 points, scoring 14 goals and adding 23 assists.
