CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees announced Thursday that free-agent R.J. Swindle has been assigned to the Charleston RiverDogs and that starting pitcher Bryan Villalona has been placed on the suspended list.

Swindle, a left-handed pitcher, was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round of the 2004 draft following a standout career at Charleston Southern University. A native of Vancouver, Swindle was the 2003 Big South Conference Player of the Year. Following his collegiate career, Swindle spent the 2004 season with Lowell in the Red Sox organization where he went 5-1 with a 1.94 ERA.

After being released by the Red Sox, he joined the Schaumberg (IL) Flyers of the independent Northern League. Swindle went 6-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 18 games (16 starts) last season and was off to a 2-2 record with a 3.41 ERA with the Flyers in '06. The 23-year-old joined the RiverDogs on the road at Rome and is on the active roster.

Villalona, who has pitched in 11 games and was 5-4 with a 3.96 ERA, was suspended for a violation of team rules.

Charleston is at Rome to begin the second half of the South Atlantic League season after finishing in third place in the first half. The RiverDogs play the first half champion Braves Monday through Sunday before returning home to The Joe for an eight-game homestand that runs June 26 through July 3.
