Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
(SIOUX FALLS, SD) â Jake Burnham received a lot of attention for his 19 home run season a year ago en route to winning the Northern League Central's Rookie of the Year award for the Canaries. This year, after being traded to the Central League's San Angelo Colts, it's not just Jake Burnham, it's the Burnham family that is drawing the notoriety.
An article on ESPN.com reports that Burnham and his wife, Kendall, made history last night by playing for the same team. According to the report, after arriving in San Angelo on Tuesday to watch Jake play, Kendall, a former fast-pitch softball star, was signed to a contract and suited up for Wednesday's game. She would go on to strike out in her first trip to the plate, a pinch-hit at-bat.
Kendall Burnham becomes the third woman ever to play professional baseball, following Ila Borders, who played for three clubs in the Northern League in the 1990's and Kendra Hanes, who played in the Frontier League in 1994.
Jake Burnham is the Colts' starting third baseman after playing a majority of the 2002 season in the Canaries outfield. The entire report can be found by visiting ESPN.com's front page.
The Birds kick off the 2003 season on May 23rd in Schaumburg before opening up the home schedule with a May 26th clash against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Great season tickets and mini plans are now on sale and can be ordered by calling (605) 333-0179.
