By acquiring the rights to Rose, the X's now hold the option year of his contract which he may play out or sign a new contract for the 2003 season.
"The middle three hitters in our lineup will arguably be the best in the league," comments field manager Jay Kirkpatrick. "With John Cotton, Tim Flahrety, and Pete Rose Jr. we have a lot of powerful sticks that can drive in a lot of runs. We just need to work on getting all the contractual stuff worked out and we will have a great lineup."
Rose, 33, enters his second straight season in the Northern League after playing for the Goldeyes in 2002. For Winnipeg, he hit .344 during 56 games and drove in 53 runs with 17 doubles and 8 homeruns. The Cincinnati, Ohio native finished the season first in the Northern League in strikeouts per plate appearances with a one-to-fifteen ratio. He proceeded to bounce around between the Orioles, White Sox, and Indians organizations before joining the Reds in 1997. Once with the Reds, Rose received a late season call-up and appeared in 11 games at the major league level with the Reds.
