 Brazos Valley Bombers

Former Bombers Selected in 2011 MLB Draft

June 9, 2011 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Brazos Valley Bombers News Release

After three days and 50 rounds of drafting in this year's Major League Baseball Draft, the Brazos Valley Bombers saw two of their former players get selected by professional teams. Nick Fleece received the news on Day 2 of the draft, while Rodarrick Jones got the phone call on Day 3.

Fleece, a right handed pitcher from Texas A&M University, spent 2009 and 2010 with the Brazos Valley Bombers. This was the second consecutive year Fleece has heard his name called, first getting picked in the 27th round by the Seattle Mariners in last year's draft. After deciding to come back for his senior season, he improved his draft stock, earning a 14th round selection this year by the Cincinnati Reds. In 2009 he appeared in 3 games totaling 7 innings, and posted an ERA of 0.00. In 2010, Fleece helped lead the Bombers to their all-time highest single season win total. Fleece appeared in 31 games for the Aggies this season, working 40 2/3 innings, and posting a 6-1 record with a 1.55 ERA and three saves.

Rodarrick Jones, an outfielder from Southern University, heard his name called for a second time as well. In 2008 he was drafted in the 21st round by the Houston Astros, but elected to play collegiate ball rather than go pro. This year he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 37th round. Along with Fleece, Jones helped lead the Bombers to a successful regular season hitting .225 with 7 extra base hits, and successfully stole six bases in eight attempts. Jones sat out this year at Southern, due to eligibility issues following his transfer from New Orleans University.

The Brazos Valley Bombers organization wish these two the best of luck in their future endeavors as well as to the eight other former Bombers in the professional ranks, as they continue their pursuit to the major leagues. Leading the charge is Caleb Joseph who is now hitting .273 with five home runs for the Orioles Double-A affiliate, and Chris Wallace, who is hitting .302 with 12 home runs for the Lexington Legends, a Single-A team in the Astros' minor league system.

The Bombers' next home game is tonight with Thirsty Thursday including $1 Beer & $1 Soft Drinks all night. Tickets are available now, and start as low as $5. You can purchase tickets online at www.bvbombers.com, by phone at 979-779-PLAY, or at the Bombers offices at 405 Mitchell Street in Bryan.
