Foreurs Spoil Isles Final Game of Road Trip in Extra Time

Charlottetown Islanders News Release

After getting the win in Rouyn-Noranda in a dominant fashion, the only thing left standing in the Islanders way of 3-0 on this Quebec road trip was the Val-d'Or Foreurs. The Isles rolled into the Centre Agnico Eagle for some early evening action Saturday with hopes of continuing their offensive outpour. Despite the record the Foreurs hold, they have proven to be some stiff competition against big opponents throughout the QMJHL. Now, in front of their home faithful, Val-d'Or had high hopes for some revenge against the Isles to push their win streak to three straight, however, a hungry Oliver Satny and a lethal Charlottetown offense weren't going to just ease off the gas for this primetime Saturday bout.

It was a Keiran Gallant penalty that queued up the first offensive punch in this game. Marshall Lessard took his time with the puck on the powerplay before lining up a hot wrist shot that beat Oliver Satny from the left circle. Lessard's third of the season came at 6:26 into the frame with the assists going to Jeremy Michel and Kale McCallum. It was the Isles lethal powerplay unit hitting the board next. A bouncing puck around the net eventually kicked its way out and onto the stick of Xavier Simoneau. Simoneau didn't hesitate before sending a wrister right under the blocker arm of Cloutier for his eleventh of the year at 11:48 into the opening frame. The tally was unassisted.

Shots on goal favored the Isles through one at 10-8.

It was a lucky bounce for the Islanders that kicked the action off in the second frame. Patrick Guay dumped a puck deep into the Foreurs zone that took a nice bounce off the end boards and right onto the stick of Sam Oliver. Oliver fired it on net and was able to find a hole somewhere on Cloutier to beat him and put the Isles up 2-1. Guay was the lone assist. Val-d'Or was able to respond though once again on the powerplay when Marshall Lessard got ahold of a one-timer to beat Satny for his second of the game. Helping hands on the tying goal went to Kale McCallum and Jeremy Michel.

Sam Oliver wasn't going to let Lessard be the only one with a muti-goal game as just 26 seconds later Oliver struck again. Sam took a beautiful pass from Jakub Brabenec right in front of the crease to bury it in the open net to retake the Isles lead 3-2. Helpers went to Brabenec and Patrick Guay. Then with just over a minute to play the Foreurs took advantage of an Islanders mix up and Thomas Pelletier walked right in and fired it past Satny to once again tie it up in the second frame. Assists were credited to Alexander Mirzabalaev and Tomas Cibulka. The Islanders were hungry to have the lead going into the intermission and Drew Elliott delivered. Elliott showed off his silky mitts when he deked around multiple Foreurs on his way to the net from the blue line, he then buried a cross-crease back-hander under the blocker arm of Cloutier to put the Isles back on top with just 17 seconds remaining. William Trudeau and Sam Oliver were the helping hands on Elliott's 8th of the season.

Shots were still in the Isles favor 20-19 going into the final frame.

The third period was not nearly as offensive as the second frame was. At 11:52 into the final regulation period, we saw Marshall Lessard complete the hat-trick. Lessard worked his way right to the front of the net to bury a rebound past Satny and even the game at four a side. Assists went to Justin Robidas and Kale McCallum. The score would stay the same when the buzzer sounded meaning we were heading to overtime.

Play was fast and furious right out of the gate in the 3-on-3 extra frame, however, it was the Foreurs who ended up being the most furious team with the puck. Justin Robidas was able to use some speed to work his way through the Islanders and drive the net where he slid the game-winner right through Satny's five-hole. Val-d'Or picked up the 5-4 win and two points thanks to their captain. The helper was credited to Felix Paquet.

Final shots favored Charlottetown 34-28.

Three Stars of the Game:

Marshall Lessard(VDO)- Hat-Trick.

Sam Oliver(CHA)- 2 goals and 1 assist.

Kale McCallum(VDO)- 3 assists.

Even with the unfortunate end in this one, the Islanders still managed to pick up five out of six possible points on this three-game road trip. The boys in black and harvest gold now make their way back across the bridge and prepare to host the Drummondville Voltigeurs this Wednesday at the Eastlink Centre. Puck drop is set for 7 pm, get your tickets early and come watch Xavier Simoneau clash with his old team for the second time this season!
