Fort Worth Flyers News Release
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth Flyers started hot and ended hot to close out the Austin Toros in overtime, 108-107 in another nail biter at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Led by a pair of double-doubles from point guard Vonteego Cummings with 16 points and 12 assists and forward Anthony Terrell with 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, the Flyers were able to hold off a late rally from the Toros.
"Anthony was our energizer tonight. He came out and created mismatches with his speed and quickness which gave us a much needed lift from our bench," said Flyers head coach Sam Vincent. "We were lucky to escape with a win because we didn't take care of the ball and had some defensive breakdowns."
The Flyers jumped out to a 9-0 start with Cummings and forward Ime Udoka leading the way early. Fort Worth had a 27-20 lead at the end of the first quarter but squandered it away in the second with sloppy play and poor shooting. The Flyers regained their stride in the third quarter with good shooting and fast break opportunities, taking a one point lead into the final quarter. But, the Toros did not go away quietly with six lead changes down the stretch, and all five Toros starters scored in double figures. Toros guard Ramel Curry nailed a 25 foot 3-pointer to tie the game at 97 and extend the game to overtime. The Flyers were able to hold off Austin's late charge and snatch a win as Curry's last second 3-pointer was ruled a two-point shot by the officials as his foot was on the line, and the Flyers won 108-107.
The Flyers were led by Udoka's 22 points, and four of the five Flyers starters reached double figures. Anthony Wilkins contributed 16 points, and Luke Schenscher added 12. Kelenna Azubuike scored 8 points and added energy off the bench in his home debut with the team.
All but three Toros players reached double figures in scoring, and Curry led the way with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists to keep the Toros close all night. Scott Merritt chipped in 18 points, and Derrick Zimmerman helped the Toros' cause with 16 points. Jamar Smith had 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Tonight's win brings the Flyers to 5-3 on the season and drops the Toros to 2-5. The two teams will battle it out again tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
