
Patriots to host holiday prep championships

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., December 13 - The NBA Development League's Fayetteville Patriots and the Cumberland County School System have announced a partnership that sets the consolation and championship games of the annual high school SunCom Holiday Classic tournament as part of an expanded Patriots gameday on Friday, December 30, 2005.
The Holiday Hoops Celebration presented by the Fayetteville Patriots will tip off at Noon at the Crown Coliseum with the consolation game of the girls' tournament, followed by the boys' consolation matchup at 2 p.m. At 4, the girls' title game will start, with the boys' final set to start at 6. Then at 8, the Patriots tip off against the Florida Flam e. In all, fans can watch five basketball games for one special admission p rice of $5 for reserved seating. And as a bonus, if the Patriots do not win the nightcap, fans will receive free tickets to the following night's game against the Flame, which will be part of 'Fayetteville's Biggest New Year's Eve P arty.'
'This event was successful last year and we were able to sit down and make it ev en better this year,' said Patriots team president Todd DeMoss. 'It's still a reserved-seat event but, in celebration of our 5th anniversary season, it's going to be five games for just five dollars. We've improved the presentation, reduced the price and we're even guaranteeing a Patriots win. It's going to be a great night.'
The first three days of the high school tournam ents will be played at areas schools ' boys' games at South View and girls' games at Jack Britt. The eight county schools participating this year are Britt, South View, Seventy-First, Westover, Cape Fear, E.E. Smith, Douglas Byrd and Gray's Creek. 'This tourna ment means a lot to the people of Cumberland County,' said Fred McDaniel, the school system's student ac tivities director. 'There are bragging rights at stake for the kids and gre at basketball for the fans. We had a great time doing it with the Patriots last year and with the adjustments we've made, it should be even bigger thi s year.'
In addition, Nelson & Nelson Chiropractic Centers have announced plans sponsor a delayed cablecast of the Holiday Hoops games on Time Warner Cable channel 60.
The 'guar anteed win' aspect will come into play at the end of the Patriots' game. If Florida wins, tickets for Saturday's game will be distributed to the fans as th ey leave the Crown Coliseum.
The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Thirty-four (34) players have been called up to the NBA on 50 separate occasions. Ten (10) former D-League coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 30 front office executives have also been called up since the start of t he league's inaugural season in November of 2001.< /P>
Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices.
