Florida Fire Frogs Game Notes: August 24, 2018
TODAY'S GAME: Game one of a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (DET) from Osceola County Stadium...Game four of a six-game six-game homestand against the Jupiter Hammerheads (MIA) and Flying Tigers (1-2)...Florida is coming off a series loss to the Hammerheads to open the homestand after dropping the rubber match on Thursday night...Fourth, and final, series (13 games) between Florida and Lakeland in 2018, with Florida leading the trailing the series, 4-6...The Fire Frogs dropped a three-game series at home against the Detroit Tigers' affiliate at Osceola County Stadium from April 20-22.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHER: 22-year-old Tucker Davidson makes his 25th start of the season in the opener of the three-game set against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Friday night...The Amarillo, Texas native entered the 2018 season as the 13th- (Baseball America) and 23rd- (MLB.com) ranked prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization, and is currently 25th (MLB.com)...The southpaw earned his seventh win of the season by blanking Lakeland over 7.1 innings in a 5-0 victory...The Midland College product scattered three hits and struck out six on 88 pitches (60 strikes)...Friday will be Davidson's third start against the Flying Tigers...The 2016 draft pick is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA (5er/11.0ip) against the Detroit Tigers' affiliate, but has not faced them at Osceola County Stadium this season.
LATE LEAD FALTERS IN RUBBER-MATCH LOSS TO HAMMERHEADS: The Florida Fire Frogs saw an 8-3 lead heading into the ninth turn into a 9-8 loss in the rubber match against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night, handing the Atlanta Braves' affiliate its 21st series loss of the season.
Florida allowed the six runs in the ninth inning on four hits and two errors. Daysbel Hernandez issued two walks in the inning, and exited with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second and one out. Chase Johnson-Mullins struck out Lazaro Alonso, but gave up an infield single to Will Allen to tie the game, with an errant throw to first allowing the go-ahead run to score.
LET THE WATER FLOW: Drew Waters extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-hit night...The switch hitter is batting .353 (12-for-34) with six runs scored, three doubles, a triple and an RBI out of the lead-off spot of all eight games during the streak...The 19-year-old is also in the middle of a 13-game on-base streak, in which he is hitting .362 since Aug. 10.
BULLPEN BREAKDOWN: For the sixth time in August, the Fire Frogs bullpen blew a save on Thursday night...Over 66.2 innigs during the final month of the season, the relievers have allowed 61 runs (47 earned) on 81 hits and 38 walks...Florida has had a lead at any point after the sixth inning 13 times this month, but only has six wins in those contests.
SPOILER ALERT: With the Fire Frogs being eliminated from playoff contention, the team's role through the remaining 11 games will be to play "spoiler." Of the remaining contests, seven are against teams in the top two of their respective divisions (LAK - three games/four games back, CHA - four games/1.5-game lead).
JUMPING IN THE SHOW: Former Florida starter Bryse Wilson made his big league debut with the Atlanta Braves on Monday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, earning the win with no runs allowed on three hits, three walks and five strikeouts across five frames...The Braves 13th-ranked prospect (MLB.com) became the seventh Fire Frog to make it to the show, joining LHP A.J. Minter, LHP Luiz Gohara, LHP Adam McCreery, RHP Chad Sobotka, RHP Touki Toussaint and OF Ronald Acuna...The 20-year-old appeared in only five games at the High-A level this season, posting a 2-0 record with an ERA of just 0.34 (1er/26.2ip).
BUILDING THE PIPELINE: MLB Pipeline revealed its updated prospect rankings, and nine Atlanta Braves farmhands cracked the top-100...Of the nine, seven either currenlty played, or have previously played for the Fire Frogs: Kyle Wright (24), Ian Anderson (38), Austin Riley (43), Cristian Pache (57), Luiz Gohara (61), Touki Toussaint (76), and Drew Waters (98).
