Flight 13 lands extension and Canuck receiver re-signs
February 13, 2006 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is pleased to announce that both DB Clifford Ivory and WR Michael Palmer will continue to wear Double Blue. Ivory has signed a contract extension that will see him through Grey Cup 2007 and Palmer has avoided free agency by re-signing through 2008.
Commented General Manager/Vice-President of Football Operations Adam Rita: "Clifford has become one of the premiere DB's in our league and we're excited that he decided to stay with us for another season".
Ivory, who is currently tied with teammate DB Adrion Smith and former great DB Ed Berry for the team lead in all-time interceptions for touchdowns, is entering his seventh CFL season and his fifth as an Argonaut. Clifford is a three-time CFL and East Division All-Star.
Devoted to the community, âCliff' was the Argonauts' nominee for the 2004 Tom Pate Memorial Award - an award handed out by the CFLPA in recognition of outstanding community leadership. The nomination acknowledged the hundreds of hours Ivory commits each year in support of community initiatives, especially the Argonauts' Huddle-Up Against Bullying Program.
Commented Palmer: "I am really happy to have the opportunity to stay with a great organization in the great city of Toronto. I love playing with this team and I love playing in this city. I can't wait to get back on the field and go to battle with my teammates".
A University of Guelph graduate, Palmer, joined the Argos as a rookie in 2003 and is coming off a career year that saw him make 17 catches for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns in 18 games. Perhaps his biggest highlight of the year came when Palmer caught the game-winning touchdown pass in Week 3 versus Saskatchewan; a catch that completed a remarkable 27-26, 4th quarter comeback win for the Boatmen.
Remarked Adam Rita: "We think Mike is an up-and-coming young player who will compete for a starting role this season. We're excited about his development thus far, and can't wait to see what else is in store".
The Toronto Argonauts also announced today that veteran DT Chuck Walsh has been released.
The Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 15 Grey Cup championships to their credit.
