Modesto Nuts News Release

Lake Elsinore, CA. - Matt Flemer pitched the Nuts to their first shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over the Storm on Monday night to earn a split of the four-game series at The Diamond.

Flemer (W, 4-4) had allowed 10 hits in two of his previous three starts, but allowed just four in a season-high-tying seven inning pitched. Flemer was solid early but had to work out of a couple jams late. The righty worked around a one out double in the sixth and stranded a leadoff double in the seventh.

For the first time in seven games, the Nuts (12-33) scored first. In the first inning Trevor Story plated David Kandilas with a RBI groundout. Sean Dwyer followed with a RBI single. The Nuts knocked Storm (26-19) starter Colin Rea out of the game after 4.2 innings. The righty consistently worked out of trouble after the first inning allowing seven hits but just the two runs.

Matt Wessinger added a RBI single in the sixth and Chris O'Dowd drilled his first home run of the year over the 36-foot wall in right field.

Jacob Newberry tossed a perfect eighth with two strikeouts for the Nuts and Raul Fernandez worked a scoreless ninth.

The Nuts return home to open a seven-game homestand on Tuesday evening. In the opener of a three-game set against the Rawhide, Ben Alsup will start for the Nuts against Jesse Darrah. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m.
