Giants Begin Three-Game Series Against Stockton Tonight
The San Jose Giants open a seven-game homestand this evening with the first of three straight contests against the Stockton Ports at Municipal Stadium. Pat Young (3-0, 4.36) is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants tonight. After the current series versus the Ports, San Jose hosts the Visalia Rawhide for a four-game set beginning on Friday. The Giants are in the midst of a 17-game stretch (May 13-29) playing only Stockton and Visalia.
Road Trip Review
The Giants posted a 4-3 record on their road trip that concluded yesterday. San Jose began the trip by taking two out of three in Stockton before splitting a four-game series with Visalia. The series victory against the Ports was the Giants' first on the road since winning two out of three in Bakersfield from April 17-19.
Offense Erupts
San Jose achieved a new season-high in runs scored yesterday afternoon in their 12-8 win over Visalia at Recreation Park. It marked the second time this year that the Giants have scored at least 10 runs. San Jose's 16 hits and three home runs also matched season-high totals. 10 of the Giants' 16 hits yesterday went for extra bases (five doubles, two triples and three home runs). Additionally, the five runs scored by San Jose in the top of the sixth tied for their highest scoring inning of the year.
Recent Success
Since falling to a season-high eight games under .500 on May 5 (12-20), the Giants have posted an 8-5 record.
Odds And Ends
Last Saturday's 7-6, 11-inning victory over Visalia was the Giants' first extra-inning win this season (1-4) ... Saturday was also the largest deficit overcome (five runs) by San Jose to win a game this year ... The Giants are 13-9 (.591) in games decided by one or two runs this season compared to 7-16 (.304) in games decided by three runs or more.
Minicozzi Returns
Infielder Mark Minicozzi was added to San Jose's roster from the Fresno (AAA) disabled list on Friday. Minicozzi is recovering from a separated left shoulder sustained on April 5 while playing for the Grizzlies. Minicozzi, 31, was originally drafted by San Francisco in 2005 and played in 144 games with San Jose during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Minicozzi was released by the Giants in 2008, spent three years (2009-11) playing independent league ball and then resigned with San Francisco as a minor league free agent in 2012. He led the Double-A Eastern League with a .309 batting average last season while playing for Richmond (30 2B, 10 HR, 66 RBI).
Bullpen Turnaround
Over the last 11 games, the Giants bullpen has compiled a stellar 2.38 ERA (14 ER/53.0 IP). San Jose relievers struggled throughout April posting a cumulative 5.48 ERA, but thus far in May, the Giants bullpen possesses a 4.03 ERA. San Jose's six losses when leading after six innings and four losses when leading after seven innings are still league-high totals.
Starters Scuffling
San Jose starting pitchers have not worked past the second inning in each of the last three games. Over the last three contests, Giants starters have allowed a total of 17 runs (15 ER) in 5 1/3 innings. During the road trip, San Jose starting pitchers had an 11.57 ERA.
Delfino Delivers
Third baseman Mitch Delfino is tied for seventh in the California League in home runs (8) and tied for tenth in RBI's (29) to go with a .313 batting average. Delfino also ranks as the second-toughest player in the league to strikeout (one strikeout every 10.4 at-bats). Delfino has hit safely in 24 out of his last 28 games.
Okert Perfect In Save Chances
Steven Okert has excelled in closing games this season as the left-hander is a perfect 11-for-11 in save opportunities to go with a 1.59 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings. Okert is limiting the opposition to a .202 batting average. Prior to this year, Okert had collected just two career saves in two professional seasons. Okert's 11 saves this season rank tied for first in the league.
Opponent Notes: Stockton Ports
The Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, are in third place in the North Division with a 22-23 record. Stockton is sixth in the league in batting average (.255), first in home runs (54) and seventh in ERA (4.55). First baseman Matt Olson leads the league with 11 home runs.
