San Jose Giants News Release

VISALIA - The San Jose Giants scored a season-high 12 runs in a 12-8 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Monday afternoon at Recreation Park to earn a split of the four-game series. Elliott Blair, Mark Minicozzi and Blake Miller each homered as the Giants pounded out 16 hits in the contest. With the victory, San Jose finishes their seven-game road trip with a winning 4-3 record.

Miller (4-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Minicozzi (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) each finished a triple shy of the cycle while combining for seven runs batted in to lead the offensive attack. Shawn Payne (3-for-5, 2 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) added three extra-base hits while Jesus Galindo (3-for-5, 3B, RBI) and Blair (2-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI) also starred at the plate.

The back-and-forth affair saw the Giants take the lead for good with a five-run rally in the top of the sixth. With Visalia ahead 6-5, Blair began the sixth inning with a double into the right field corner. After back-to-back groundouts from the next two hitters, Trevor Brown and Jesus Navarro, Blair was at third with two down. Galindo was up next and he produced the first of five consecutive RBI hits with a sharp single up the middle to bring home Blair with the tying run. Payne then tripled down the right field line scoring Galindo for a 7-6 San Jose lead. Mitch Delfino continued the rally with an RBI single and then Minicozzi belted an RBI double to the fence in left center to make it 9-6. Miller followed with the fifth straight hit when he lined an RBI single into left center extending the lead to 10-6.

Visalia got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh when Evan Marzilli connected for a two-out, two-RBI double to right field. The hit brought the Rawhide to within 10-8, but Visalia got no closer in the late innings. Tyler Mizenko was summoned from the bullpen after Marzilli's hit and promptly retired Ronnie Freeman on a groundout to end the inning.

Mizenko returned to the mound in the bottom of the eighth and struck out two in a scoreless inning of work.

In the top of the ninth, the Giants tallied two insurance runs as Delfino reached on an error to leadoff before Miller clubbed a one-out home run to left. The homer, Miller's fourth of the season, gave San Jose a 12-8 cushion.

Steven Okert then struck out two in a perfect bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. It was the only 1-2-3 inning thrown by a Giants pitcher in the game.

Tyler Rogers (2-0) earned the win out of the San Jose bullpen after tossing 2 2/3 innings with two runs (both earned) and four hits allowed. Rogers, who entered the game to begin the bottom of the fifth with the Giants down 6-5, held Visalia off the scoreboard in his first two innings of work before allowing the two-RBI double to Marzilli in the seventh. Mizenko (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) and Okert (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) combined for 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief to finish the game.

The scoring began early as both teams plated two runs in the first inning. In the top of the frame, Galindo led off with a triple into the left center field gap before immediately scoring when the next batter, Payne, doubled down the left field line. Payne scored two batters later on Minicozzi's groundout to shortstop.

The Rawhide though answered in the bottom half against San Jose starter Martin Agosta as Brandon Drury smacked a two-run home run to left tying the game 2-2.

The Giants temporarily reclaimed the lead in the top of the second when Blair lined a solo homer to left center - his fourth round-tripper of the year. But in the bottom of the inning, Visalia produced three more runs to move in front by a 5-3 margin. After Marzilli singled to leadoff and Freeman doubled, Kevin Medrano laced a double down the left field line to score both runners. Then with two outs, Rudy Flores came through with an RBI single to knock Agosta out of the game.

Agosta was charged with five runs (all earned) on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one.

San Jose pulled to within 5-4 in the top of the third as Payne led off with a double and scored two batters later on Minicozzi's one-out single. The Rawhide jumped back ahead by two runs in the bottom of the fourth though against Ryan Bradley (2 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 SO) when Flores walked with two outs before an RBI double from Ryan Court.

Minicozzi's solo home run down the left field line in the top of the fifth cut the Visalia lead to 6-5 before the Giants exploded in the sixth to take control of the game.

Rawhide reliever Henry Garcia (3-2) suffered the loss after yielding all five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Garcia worked 2/3 of an inning with five hits allowed.
