Last Week's Games

Wednesday, January 23rd - Quad City Flames 4 at Rochester Americans 1

Goals early (by Warren Peters and Grant Stevenson) and late (by Tomi Maki and Cam Cunning) propelled Quad City to a 4-1 victory over Rochester on Wednesday night by Blue Cross Arena. Peters netted his ninth to start the scoring while Stevenson added his team-leading 23rd goal of the year later in the first. Maki and Cunning finished the job by scoring in the third. The Flames finished the first with a 2-0 lead following goals by Warren Peters and Grant Stevenson in the opening frame. Peters scored on a feed from Brandon Prust at 5:29 of the first period. Stevenson followed with a power-play goal at 12:12 of the first. The tally extended Stevenson's franchise record point streak to nine games while also extending his goal scoring streak to four straight games. The goal was Stevenson's 14th power-play tally, good for a tie for first in the league in man advantage markers. The Amerks built momentum in the second period when a Cam Cunning goal was disallowed. Rochester capitalized on the second wind to cut the Flames lead to one. Stefan Meyer scored the only goal of the middle frame when he converted during a Rochester power play to make it a 2-1 game after 40 minutes. A hard fought third ended with Tomi Maki scoring on a penalty shot and Cam Cunning adding an empty netter to open up a 4-1 final in favor of the Flames. The Flames were awarded a penalty shot when Rochester netminder Adam Dennis attempted to thwart a Kris Chucko chance after the sixth attacker had already replaced him on the ice. Maki took the penalty shot and scored for the first penalty shot goal in franchise history. Cunning added an empty net goal 50 seconds later to set the final at 4-1.

Friday, January 25th - Quad City Flames 4 at Hamilton Bulldogs 0

The Flames recorded their second shutout of the year behind a 26-save performance by Curtis McElhinney on Friday night in Hamilton. Krys Kolanos powered the offense with a pair of goals while Carsen Germyn and Derek Couture added solo markers in the 4-0 win. The Flames scored the only goal of the opening period when Carsen Germyn found Krys Kolanos in the right wing circle. Kolanos wired a shot past Hamilton netminder Carey Price for his 17th goal of the year. The goal extended Kolanos' scoring streak to five games. He has six points (two goals and four assists) during the streak. The Flames tacked on another pair in the second period. Carsen Germyn netted his sixth goal of the year following a tick-tack-toe passing sequence. Tim Hambly worked the puck from the left-wing point down to the half wall for Grant Stevenson. Stevenson flipped a pass into the slot for Germyn, who powered home a slap shot for his sixth goal of the year. The Flames followed that by scoring a goal with just 13 seconds left in the middle frame. David Van der Gulik worked the puck off the Hamilton end wall and found Derek Couture in front who netted his fifth goal of the season to put the Flames up by a trio of goals. Kolanos struck again for his second goal of the night at 13:37 of the closing frame. Kolanos scored on a cross crease feed from Grant Stevenson during a 4-on-3 Flames power play. McElhinney endured his busies period in the closing frame as he turned aside 13 Bulldogs shots to preserve his second shutout of the season.

The Flames finished the Eastern half of their five game road trip with a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Saturrday at Ricoh Coliseum. Grant Stevenson netted the lone Flames goal to extend his scoring streak to 11 games. Stevenson has 20 points (12 goals and eight assists) during the streak. Toronto took a 1-0 lead on a first period goal by defenseman Jay Harrison. Harrison was serving a penalty for slashing when Robbie Earl began a rush through neutral ice. Harrison escaped the box and joined Earl to create a 2-on-1 break for the Marlies. Earl fed Harrison who netted his sixth goal of the year to give the Marlies a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Flames tied the game when Grant Stevenson netted the lone goal of the middle period. During a 4-on-3 Flames power play, Stevenson received a feed from Hambly at the Marlies goal line. The tally was Stevenson's league-leading 15th goal of the season on the man advantage. Pogge held his team in the game in the third. The Marlies netminder denied Krys Kolanos and Warren Peters on point-blank chances, and also received some good fortune as scoring chances hopped over the sticks of David Van der Gulik and Eric Nystrom at points in the period. Jeremy Williams netted the game-winner for the Marlies with his 11th goal of the year at 16:16 of the final frame. Williams jetted through neutral ice before beating Flames netminder Curtis McElhinney with a blast from the top of the left wing circle. could not net the equalizer before falling to 18-17-2-5 on the season.
