Flames Take Gaudreau In Fourth

The Calgary Flames became the first team to select a member of the new Dubuque Fighting Saints in the 2011 NHL Draft by taking John Gaudreau with the 13th pick of the fourth round (104th overall). Gaudreau led the Fighting Saints and was second in the USHL with 36 goals scored during his campaign that resulted in him being named USHL Rookie of the Year in 2010-11.

Fighting Saints Head Coach Jim Montgomery had been highly complimentary of Gaudreau's work ethic all season long. From the draft in St. Paul, MN, he once again recognized the efforts of his leading scorer.

"Congratulations to John on being selected so highly by the Flames," he said. "He earned this by having such a great year and getting better each and every month of the season."

Gaudreau will enter the college game next season, heading to Northeastern University where he will play along with fellow former Fighting Saint Vinny Saponari.

Gaudreau was one of 27 players who played in the USHL last season taken by an NHL team in the draft. In addition, ten players who had played in the USHL during a previous season were selected by NHL clubs.
