
Flames Add Nine to Training Camp Roster

Saint John, NB â The Saint John Flames announced today the addition of goaltenders Brent Krahn and Dany Sabourin, defencemen Mike Martin, Rick Mrozik and Jan Vodrazka and forwards Matt Doman, Jason Morgan, Ryan Shmyr and Darcy Verot to the Club's 2002 training camp roster. All nine players were recently released from the Calgary Flames training camp.
Krahn, 20, skated last season with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. In 18 contests, the 6'4", 200 lb native of Winkler, Manitoba, posted an 8-6-2 record with an .891 sv% and a 3.54 GAA. In 94 junior career games with Calgary, Krahn posted 63 wins, 22 losses and 5 ties with 5 shutouts, a 2.84 GAA and a .901 sv%. During the 1999-00 WHL season, Krahn posted a 33-6-0 record (an 84.6% winning percentage) with 4 shutouts, a 2.38 average and .912 sv%. The Calgary Flames made Krahn the 9th overall selection in the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
Sabourin, 22, split last season between Johnstown (ECHL) and Saint John. In 27 games with Johnstown, the 6'4" native of Val d'Or, Quebec posted a 14-10-1 record with a 3.28 GAA and an .892 save percentage. In 10 appearances for Saint John, Sabourin went 4-4-0 recording his first pro shutout, a 2.41 GAA, a .909 sv%. A gradate of the QMJHL, Sabourin appeared in 174 career games with Sherbrooke from 1997/98 through 1999/00, posting a 48-50-9 record with a 3.83 GAA. Calgary Selected Sabourin in the 4th round, 108th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
Martin, 25, began last season with Saint John. The 6'2", 205 lb native of Stratford, Ontario recorded 9 points (1g, 8a) and 14 penalty minutes in 13 games with Saint John before being sidelined with an injury for the balance of the year. Martin, a member of Saint John's 2001 Calder Cup Championship team, returns for his third season with the Flames. In 195 career AHL games, the OHL graduate has posted 56 points (14 goals, 42 assists) and 198 PIMs. A product of the Windsor Spitfires, Martin posted junior career totals of 243 games played, 32 goals, 112 assists, 144 points and 381 PIMs. Martin was selected in the 3rd round, 65th overall, of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers.
Mrozik, 27, returns for his third season with the Saint John Flames. In 55 games during 2001-02, Mrozik recorded 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists) and 27 penalty minutes. A graduate of the University of Minnesota â Duluth hockey program, the 6'2", 185 lb Native of Duluth, Minnesota made his professional debut in 1997-98 with the Portland Pirates. Selected by the Dallas Stars in the 6th round, 136th overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Mrozik has appeared in 280 career regular season AHL games posting 13 goals and 39 assists for 62 points and 168 penalty minutes. Mrozik was a member of Saint John's 2001 Calder Cup Championship team.
Vodrazka, 25, skated in 49 games with Lowell (AHL) last season posting 4 points (1 goals, 3 assists) and 152 penalty minutes and 4 games with Florida (ECHL) recording 6 penalty minutes. In 323 pro career games, Vodrazka has recorded 66 points (17 goals, 49 assists) and 1,226 penalty minutes. The 6' 1", 200 lb native of Plzen, Czech Republic made his AHL debut during the 2000-01 season appearing in 6 games with the Kentucky. He has appeared in 55 career AHL regular season games with 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists) and 183 penalty minutes.
Doman, 22, spent last season with the University of Wisconsin Badgers (NCAA) and made his professional debut with the Flames after the NCAA season wrapped up. Doman recorded 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) and 68 penalty minutes in his 34 games with the Badgers and 1 assist and 2 penalty minutes in 6 games with Saint John. The 5'11", 205 lb native of Crystal Lake, Illinois was selected by the Calgary Flames in the 5th round, 135th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In four season with the University of Wisconsin, Doman posted totals of 135 games played, 65 points (26 goals, 39 assists) and 239 penalty minutes.
Morgan, 25, skated his first full season with Saint John last year and posted career bests in both goals (17) and points (37) in 76 games played. Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 5th round, 188th overall, in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, the 6'1", 194 lb native of St. John's, Newfoundland has played with clubs in the now-defunct IHL, the ECHL, the AHL and the NHL. In 207 career AHL games with Springfield, Hamilton and Saint John, Morgan has collected 101 points (39 goals, 62 assists) and 215 PIMs. Morgan joined the Flames for the 2001 AHL post-season and was a member of Saint John's 2001 Calder Cup Championship team. In 14 career NHL games (all with the Los Angeles Kings), Morgan has recorded 1 goal and 4 PIMs.
Shmyr, 25, split the 2001-02 season between the Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL) and, in his AHL debut, the Rochester Americans. In 34 games with Rochester, the 6'6", 230 lb native of Fairview, Alberta recorded 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) and 170 penalty minutes. In 29 games with Johnstown he recorded 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) and 174 penalty minutes. Shmyr spent the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons with the San-Diego Gulls of the WCHL (34 gp, 3g-2a=5pts, 213 PIMs) and 1999/00 and 2000/01 seasons with the Lubbock Cotton Kings of the WPHL (136 gp, 8g-17a=25pts, 729 PIMs).
Verot, 26, skated in 71 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during 2001-02 recording 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) and 387 penalty minutes. The 6'0", 190 lb native of Radville, Saskatchewan has spent the past three seasons with Wilkes-Barre appearing in 172 regular season games recording 51 points (21 goals, 30 assists) and 830 penalty minutes. Verot also appeared in 21 post-season games during his tenure with the Penguins, recording 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) and 40 penalty minutes during the 2001 Calder Cup run which saw the Penguins defeated in six games in the finals by the Saint John Flames.
All on-ice training camp workouts through to October 4 will be open to the general public.
