Syracuse, NY (September 25, 2002) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they have named Mike Derecola ( dare-RA-cola) as the athletic trainer for the 2002-03 season.

Derecola begins his first season as the Crunch's athletic trainer after spending the previous two seasons with the Charlotte Checkers (ECHL).

Prior to joining the Checkers, Derecola spent the 1999-2000 season with the Huntington Blizzard (ECHL). In addition to his work with Huntington, Derecola assisted with the 1999-ESPN Pro Figure Skating Championships and worked for the HEALTHSOUTH Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center. He spent the 1998-99 season with the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) as a student athletic trainer.

Derecola earned his Bachelor of Science degree from West Chester University and is certified by both the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is currently involved in USA Hockey, educating and overseeing youth hockey players on strength and conditioning, nutrition and hydration.

Derecola and his wife, Ann Marie, reside in Manlius.
