
Five-Run Third Drops Roadrunners

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings used a five-run top of the third inning to defeat the Edinburg Roadrunners 7-3 Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The WhiteWings (31-23) got the scoring started in the top of the third. After an error kept the inning going, Romulo Ruiz hit a two-run home run. After a double and a walk in the inning, Nestor Castillo hit a two-run triple scoring Mario Mercedes and Luis Sumoza. Bryan Marquez then followed with an RBI single that made the score 5-0.
The Roadrunners (34-21) answered back in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Felix Molina delivered a three-run double to left field that made it 5-3 RGV.
Aaron Tullo (2-2) got the tough-luck loss as he allowed five runs, none of which were earned, in six innings pitched.
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth when Leugim Barroso hit an RBI single that scored Marquez from second extending the WhiteWings lead 6-3.
Luis Noel (5-2) picked up his fifth win of the season after allowing three runs in seven innings pitched with four strike outs.
In the top of the ninth, Leivi Ventura hit a solo-home run giving RGV an insurance run making it 7-3 RGV.
After Julio Santana walked the first two batters of the bottom of the ninth, Nick Lezendorf recorded the final three outs of the game giving the WhiteWings the 7-3 victory. It was Lezendorf's sixth save of the season.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will wrap up their season series Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Matison Smith (4-3) is expected to face Luis Chirinos (7-3) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
