June 2, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers gave up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Yuma Scorpions at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. From the third inning to the eighth inning 14 Vipers were retired in a row and in total the Snakes were held to five hits while 11 batters struck out. With the defeat Calgary sees their record fall to 8-4 but remain tied for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division as the Chico Outlaws also lost.
Making his first start of the season Reggie Rivard (1-1) was the tough luck loser going five innings and giving up two runs on five hits. Rivard didn't give up a run in the first five innings but in the sixth ran into some trouble and left the game with two runners on base. Carlos Ladeuth (1-0) recorded the victory going six innings for the Scorpions and allowing only one run on two hits while striking out six and retiring the final ten batters he faced. Frank James was solid out of the Vipers' bullpen throwing a perfect three-up, three-down, inning.
Mark Okano had a good night at the plate going two-for-three with a hit by pitch.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Rob Recuenco walked, stole second base, Fehlandt Lentini singled, and while trying to get Lentini at first base, shortstop Deivis Rivadeneira committed a throwing error allowing Recuenco to score for the 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth Jonathan Lozada walked and Carlos Arroyo doubled to chase Rivard from the game. In came Cody Cillo who gave up a single to Carlos Villalobos that tied the game at one. Ismael Castro stepped up to the plate and promptly smacked a three run homer to give Yuma the lead. Reynaldo Rodriguez continued the damage with a base hit, a steal of second base, and he scored on a Cesar Del Rio run batted in single for a 5-1 advantage.
Nelson Castro hit a solo home run for Calgary in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 5-2. For Castro it was his third big fly of the season and his team leading 17th RBI.
The Vipers made it interesting in the top of the ninth inning as Ivan Reyes and Recuenco walked, moved into scoring position on a passed ball, and both scored when Lentini reached on an infield single. Lentini though was picked off second base to end the game with a 5-4 score.
The series rubber match will be Wednesday June 3rd at 8:00 PM MDT as the Vipers six game road trip concludes with Hideki Nagasaka (1-0) facing off against Wilton Noel on the mound. Nagasaka has made two starts this season and in 11 innings he has a 7.36 E.R.A. Noel will be making his first start after one appearance out of the bullpen.
The Snakes return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium Friday June 5th at 7:05 PM MDT to open a seven game in six day home stand against the 2008 Golden Baseball League Champion Orange County Flyers. It will be the first meeting between the two clubs since Orange County defeated Calgary in the fifth and deciding game of the Championship last season.
Saturday June 6th at 5:05 PM MDT the Vipers and Flyers will play a double-header with both games scheduled for seven innings.
This four games in three days series wraps up on Sunday June 7th at 1:35 PM MDT.
Calgary welcomes the St. George RoadRunners on Monday June 8th, Tuesday June 9th, and Wednesday June 10th all at 7:05 PM to wrap up the home stand with a three game series.
