Drew Miller Named GBL Player of the Week
June 2, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Golden Baseball League announced today that Calgary Vipers outfielder Drew Miller has been named GBL Player of the Week for the first week of the season. The first week actually encompasses the first 10 days of the GBL since the teams opened on Thursday and Friday nights this season.
During the first week of the 2009 GBL season, he hit .450, led the league in Home Runs with 4 and Runs with 16, he was second in RBIs with 13, and also second in both hits with 18 and Slugging Average at .850. Miller was also outstanding in the field and instrumental in Calgary's 7-3 start to the season.
Miller, 29, 6-1, 215, has started this season where he left off from a spectacular 2008 campaign that saw him named as a GBL All-Star and finish in the Top Ten in most hitting categories in the league. Despite missing 14 games Drew still hit a team and career high 19 home runs while knocking in 70 runs and scoring 63 tallies. In the league he finished first in outfielders fielding percentage (.991), hit by pitches (17), and sacrifice flies (9). He was also third in slugging percentage (.653), and fourth in both home runs and home runs per at-bat (1/13.21). Because of a late season injury the fifth year Viper had his ironman streak of 329 consecutive games started snapped.
Miller was also a Northern League All-Star back in 2007 and was named the Vipers' Most Outstanding Player in 2006.
Undrafted out of Oklahoma Baptist after a fine collegiate career, Drew played three seasons in the Frontier League before becoming an original Viper when Calgary began play in 2005. The Medicine Hat, Alberta native is now the longest serving player in franchise history. He has been a starting outfielder for all four seasons and is a perennial fan favorite as he has improved at the plate each year.
