Five-Run Fifth Leads RailCats to win

WINNIPEG, MB - Five two-out runs in the top of the fifth and four scoreless innings of relief from the bullpen paced the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night in front of 4,489 fans at Shaw Park. Gary has now claimed three straight series openers and has won six of their last seven games.
Winnipeg (18-18) ended Gary's five-game streak of scoring first with a run in the bottom of the first. David Rohm and former RailCat Josh Romanski recorded back-to-back one out singles, giving the Goldeyes runners on the corners. Reggie Abercrombie followed Romanski with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Rohm.
Jordan Ebert extended the Goldeyes lead to three in the fourth with a two-run single to right-center, plating both David Bergin and Mason Katz. Romanski gave Winnipeg their biggest lead of the evening at 4-0 with a two-out RBI single to right, bringing home Ebert.
Gary (21-17) took the lead for good with five two-out runs in the fifth. Anthony Cheky Jr. drove in the first two runs with a two-run single to center, bringing around both Ryan Fitzgerald and Kris Goodman. Frank Martinez followed with an RBI single to left-center, scoring Reggie Wilson. With Cheky Jr. and Martinez taking second and third following the double steal, Randy Santiesteban hit a one-hopper to the shortstop Andrew Sohn, however, Sohn airmailed first baseman Shawn Pleffner, allowing both Cheky Jr. and Martinez to score.
Charle Rosario (4-3) earned his second straight win. Rosario allowed four runs on seven hits and a season-high four walks while striking out one in five innings.
Jack Fowler (3) and Jake Mathys (1) each recorded holds with scoreless appearances out of the bullpen. Fowler struck out a batter and yielded one hit in 1.2 innings while Mathys (1) allowed a hit and a walk over 2/3 of an inning in his second professional appearance.
Carlos Diaz (2) secured the win with the five-out save. The southpaw didn't allow a hit and walked just one batter while striking out one. Cheky Jr. led the RailCats offense with a team-high two hits and two RBIs while Santiestban reached base three times and had Gary's only extra-base hit.
Kevin McGovern (5-2) was tagged with the loss. The left-hander allowed five unearned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in six innings of work.
The RailCats resume their three-game series against the reigning American Association Champion Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Southpaw Alex Gunn (2-3, 4.14) counters against right-hander Zach Nuding (2-4, 6.05) in the middle game of the series tomorrow.
