Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. (June 27, 2017) - Beamer Weems hit a game-tying three-run homer in the top of the seventh and then scored the eventual winning run in the ninth, as the Texas AirHogs rallied past the Wichita Wingnuts 4-3 on Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Wingnuts (26-12) led 3-0 at the end of six innings after Brennen Salgado laced a two-out single to plate Martin Medina, who had doubled. But the lead did not last long, as Weems lofted a three-run homer to tie the score at 3-3.
In the top of the ninth, Weems dumped a double into center off Seth Harvey (1-1), advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came around to score on Ryne Willard's RBI single to give Texas (11-27) the deciding run.
The Weems homer spoiled an excellent outing by Wingnuts starter Ryan Kussmaul, who struck out ten AirHogs over a season-high 6.2 innings of work. Mike Devine stranded a pair with a strikeout and then worked a scoreless eighth, but the Wingnuts failed to muster anything against Texas reliever Jacob Morris (1-1), who retired all six batters he faced over scoreless seventh and eighth innings.
For the second straight day, Harrison Kain led off the bottom of the first with a long solo homer to left-center field, and one batter later Brent Clevlen connected for a solo blast of his own and a 2-0 Wichita lead after one inning. But the Wingnuts wasted several excellent scoring opportunities in the middle innings, stranding a pair of runners in both the third and fourth frames against Texas starter James Russell.
The Wingnuts continue their home series with the AirHogs Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Righty Eddie Medina (4-1, 3.40) will take the mound for Wichita, while Texas will counter with right-hander TJ Bozeman (2-2, 3.04). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
