
Five Run Eighth Inning Secures Broncos Victory

San Angelo, Texas--- After a three run second inning the San Angelo Colts (36-18) led the ballgame all the way until the top of the eighth inning. The Laredo Broncos (21-33) delivered six hits and five runs in the inning to secure their second straight victory at Foster Field by a score of 5-3. The Broncos lead the series two games to none.
The scoring was inactive until the bottom of the second inning. The Colts offense stung Bronco starter Will Palmer with five singles in the frame. Nick Mahin, Butch Ballez, Travis Calloway, and Charley Belew all singled in consecutive fashion handing San Angelo a 3-0 lead.
After six innings of work, Colts starter Kenny Elkind had held Laredo to three hits and no runs. For the Broncos, Palmer settled in and the Colts lead remained at three.
In the eighth inning, however, Laredo stormed to the lead by plating five. The Broncos sent ten to the batters box. O.J. Garza singled, Jaime Morales walked, and Luis Ugueto singled to load the bases. David Cardona put Laredo on the board with a sacrifice fly to left. With runners on first and second, Mario Mendez walked to re-load the bases before Argelis Nunez tied the game with a two-run single. Luany Sanchez drove home another with a single to give the road team the first lead. Ryan Flynn struck out but Robert Moron singled to center to account for the final Broncos run.
The Colts offense did not have an answer in the eighth and ninth inning, the Broncos secured a 5-3 victory.
Kenny Elkind (3-1) threw an impressive six and 2/3 innings. The Angelo State Alum collected five strikeouts without allowing a run. Brett Lester (4-3) suffered the loss allowing two hits, two walks, and four runs. Bronco starter (2-1) Will Palmer nabbed the win, Franklyn Gracesqui earned his sixth save of the season, his second in as many nights.
San Angelo and Laredo will continue their four game series tomorrow at Foster Field. Thursday's promotion will be Thirsty Thursday sponsored by Miller Lite.
