Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA - In a bullpen day for the Modesto Nuts, five different relievers combined to toss a 4-0 shutout against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
Robert Winslow started the game and tossed two hitless innings for the Nuts (24-20).
Elvis Alvarado followed with a perfect third inning. It was the Nuts' only 1-2-3 inning of the game. In the fourth, Alvarado walked two and allowed a single to load the bases with nobody out.
Kelvin Nunez (W, 1-1) followed out of the bullpen and induced two pop outs and a strikeout to extinguish the threat. The next inning, Nunez found himself in another bases loaded jam but struck out Jarryd Dale to end that rally, stranding six baserunners over two innings. Nunez would throw three frames allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out three.
Jorge Benitez followed and worked around a pair of walks in a scoreless seventh and eighth inning.
Travis Kuhn finished things off in dramatic fashion. The righty got the first two outs before the Storm (21-23) loaded the bases again. Kuhn struck out Brandon Valenzuela to end the game and secure the Nuts' fourth shutout of the season.
In the first inning, the Nuts scored a run before they recorded a hit. Victor Labrada reached on an error and stole both second and third in the first. He would score on a Robert Perez Jr. RBI groundout. The Nuts would not get their first hit against Storm starter Noel Vela (L, 1-5) until the fourth inning when Matt Scheffler doubled home a run. Vela worked four innings allowing two runs on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts.
In the seventh, the Nuts added some insurance when Labrada doubled home a run and then scored on a Noelvi Marte RBI single.
Game three of the six-game series is on Thursday night at The Diamond against Lake Elsinore. First pitch against the Storm is at 7:05 pm.
