New Jersey Jackals News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NJ-Five New Jersey Jackals players were among those selected to play for the East squad in the 2002 Northern League All Star Game, it was announced today by the league. Outfielders Travis Bailey and Billy Rich and third baseman Ryan Kane were selected as starting players, while Joel Bennett was among the pitchers chosen to play and catcher Mikaela Dworken was tabbed as a reserve.
The 25 year-old Bailey leads the NL East in runs-batted-in with 53, runs scored with 47, extra-base hits with 32 and slugging percentage at .623. He is second in the league with 12 home runs; and his .322 batting average is 10th best overall. Earlier today Bailey was chosen as the Northern League East's Player-of-the-Week.
Rich, who earlier this season fashioned a 23 game hitting streak, leads the NL East in on-base percentage at .457. His .346 batting average ranks fourth in the league and his 17 doubles tie him for 5th most. He also has 4 home runs and 38 RBI and has played spectacular defense this season.
The Most Valuable Player at last year's All Star Game, Kane is right behind Bailey in the league RBI race. The 28 year-old third baseman is 2nd in the league with 52 RBI and is 3rd with 10 home runs. He is also batting .298 and has smacked two grand slam home runs already this season.
Bennett, a 32 year-old former major league right-hander, is 9-1 so far this season with 4 complete games, 101 strikeouts and a 2.66 ERA in 88 innings pitched. An all star a year ago with New Jersey, Bennett currently leads the league in victories, strikeouts, complete games and innings pitched and has the 6th best ERA.
The 24 year-old Dworken is the only rookie on the East team this year. He is batting .336 with 6 home runs, 27 RBI and 10 doubles so far this year.
Jackals' manager George Tsamis will manage the East squad for the second year in a row. Last year he guided the East to a win over the Central in Winnipeg.
The 2002 Northern League All Star Game will be played on August 6th at Stade Municipal in Quebec City, home of the East's Les Capitales de Quebec.
