Five Former Stingrays Appear in Calder Cup Finals

North Charleston, SC - When the AHL Calder Cup Finals commence this weekend between the Milwaukee Admirals and Hershey Bears, five former South Carolina Stingrays players will be on the ice. Rich Peverley, Joe Tenute, Deryk Engelland, Jonas Johansson, and Kirk Daubenspeck all had stops in South Carolina before moving up to the AHL.

Rich Peverley, 23, a native of Guelph, Ontario, is a wing for the Milwaukee Admirals. At 6', 185-pounds, Peverley came to the Stingrays after graduating from St. Lawrence University in 2004. In his rookie year, Peverley scored 30 goals and added 28 assists for 58 points in 69 games.

Also playing his rookie season with the Stingrays was Joe Tenute. Tenute, a 5'9", 180-pound center hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, was Rookie of the Year in the ECHL during the 2004-2005 season. Tenute lead the team in points that year scoring 34 goals and adding 41 assists for 75 points in 68 games. Tenute has 2 assists in 13 games with the Hershey Bears this post-season.

Deryk Engelland is a third year pro who spent his first two seasons with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL before joining the Stingrays this year. Engelland, at 6'2" and 197-pounds, played 35 games with the Stingrays earning 16 points on 3 goals and 13 assists before moving up to Hershey. Originally from Chetwynd, British Columbia, Engelland plays defense for the Bears as they play their way toward the Calder Cup.

Jonas Johansson also played with the Stingrays this season in between time spent with the Hershey Bears. Johansson, a 6'2" and 190-pound right winger is a native of Jonkoping, Sweden and had 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points in only 5 games with the Stingrays. Johansson's finished the regular season with the Washington Capitals of the NHL before rejoining the Bears for the post-season.

Kirk Daubenspeck, 6', 190-pound native of Madison, Wisconsin, is a goalie for the Hershey Bears. Daubenspeck began his professional career with the Jacksonville Lizard Kings of the ECHL in 1997 after the Philadelphia Flyers drafted him in the seventh round. Daubenspeck played many seasons with the Stingrays and is the all-time leader in wins with 107. He also helped the Stingrays to their 2nd Kelly Cup win in 2001.

The Calder Cup Finals begin Friday night at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The best-of-seven series marks the AHL record 19th appearance for the Hershey Bears.
