Five Different Phantoms Score in 5-2 Home Win

February 27, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The Adirondack Phantoms capped off an exciting weekend homestand Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over the Binghamton Senators in front of 3,206 fans at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Five different Phantoms scored goals in the balanced attack and Michael Leighton turned aside 25 of 27 Senators shots for the win.

Adirondack picked up at least one point for the 9th time in their last 10 games (5-1-4) as they snapped Binghamton's 11 game point streak. The Senators carried a 9-0-2 mark to the GFCC before the game. The Phantoms' win comes on the heels of Saturday night's exciting 2-1 shootout victory over the Worcester Sharks.

Logan Stephenson sparked the attack with a goal and a spirited fight on his way to being named #2 Star of the Game. His first period tally on the power play came on a long snapshot from center point that snuck past Sens goalie Garrett Zemlak. Later in the game, Stephenson dropped the gloves with Binghamton's Jason Bailey. The big Adirondack defenseman looked like he was in trouble early when Bailey landed several punches in a row. But Stephenson came back with a flurry of punches of the end connecting squarely with Bailey on some.

Zac Rinaldo scored his third goal of the season and first since October early in the second period when he re-directed a Danny Syvret feed from the left point. Rinaldo had created the scoring opportunity by helping win the puck away with an aggressive forecheck in the corner.

The Phantoms held the 2-0 lead into the second intermission but Binghamton would come storming back early in the third with two goals in the first six minutes tying the game at 2-2.

Roman Wick finished off a 2-on-1 rush in the opening minute for his 13th of the year and Ryan Keller would score his 24th of the season five minutes later on the power play deflecting home Derek Smith's centering feed.

The 2-2 deadlock would only last 35 seconds however as Ben Holmstrom would take advantage of an open lane from the left-wing straight to the net. Holmstrom drove around Zemlak to stuff the puck in past his left leg. The 4-on-4 tally proved to be the eventual game-winner. Holmstrom's 10th of the year for the 3-2 lead was assisted by Michael Ryan and Erik Gustafsson.

Michael Leighton made several fine saves to preserve the one goal lead while the Phantoms had several scoring chances of their own denied by scrambling Binghamton defense. Michael Ryan rifled one off the left post on one of several close calls.

With 1:30 remaining, Mike Testwuide would pick up a rebound of a Michael Ryan shot and backhand lift the puck over the diving goalie Zemlak to give the Phantoms some breathing room at 4-2. It was Testwuide's 8th of the year and 6th in last 11 games.

Denis Hamel drilled one from the left-wing side of the blueline into the open net with only 2.2 seconds left to cap the thrilling win with his team-leading 18th goal of the season.

Adirondack improved to 2-3-1 against the Senators this season with all five points against them coming on home ice. Since December 17, Adirondack is now 16-8-7 and 14-8-7 under Head Coach Joe Paterson.

Adirondack is on a two game win streak and has points in nine of their last ten (5-1-4). Binghamton outshot Adirondack 27-24. Both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Sens return to the Glens Falls Civic Center on Wednesday, March 16. The teams will close out the eight game season series on April 9 in Binghamton.

The Phantoms have a week off between games before returning to action next Saturday at 5pm at the Albany Devils. That is the first of three consecutive games for Adirondack against Albany. The Phantoms' next home game is next Sunday at 3pm hosting the Devils. The two teams are tied at three games apiece midway through the 12 game season battle for the Time Warner Cable Cup.

Phantoms Notes: Erik Gustafsson rejoined the Phantoms after making his NHL debut the previous night with the Philadelphia Flyers. Gustafsson played over 16 minutes in Philadelphia's loss at Ottawa and logged 4 PIM's. Scratches for the game included Marc-Andre Bourdon, Matt Walker and Stefan Legein.
