Lancaster Stormers News Release

The 2014 Atlantic League Champion Lancaster Barnstormers are well represented on the league's season end All-Star Team, it was announced today.

Lancaster's contingent is headed by right-handed pitcher Chris Schwinden, the league leader in both wins and ERA, and outfielder Cole Garner, who paced the circuit in home runs.

Three more players were named to the league's second team. Catcher Juan Apodaca, one of only three position players to have spent the entire season on the Barnstormers' active roster, was picked along with closer Jason Urquidez and outfielder Blake Gailen.

Schwinden ended the season with a 14-5 record and 2.57 ERA. He started the season with a 9-1 mark around a three-week stay with the Texas Rangers' Class AAA team in Round Rock, TX. He threw 16 quality starts in the regular season, and the Barnstormers were 18-8 in games started by the Visalia, CA native.

The right-hander added two wins in the post-season, including a complete game effort in the decisive fifth contest against the Somerset Patriots in the division round.

Garner slammed 26 homers to pace the league while finishing third in both RBI (92) and batting average (.313). The California native set a franchise record with 292 total bases, only four shy of the league mark. He also tied the Lancaster club mark with 69 extra base hits on the season while spending ample time in both left and center fields.

Apodaca, known largely as a defensive specialist, contributed a .277 average with 18 doubles and five home runs on the season. He drove in 32. Urquidez recorded 28 saves, tied for second in the league, while going 3-2 with a 2.37 ERA. The right-hander, with his final save of the season, set the Barnstormers' career saves record with 52.

Gailen, a first team Atlantic League first team All-Star in both 2012 and 2013, put up such garish numbers that he made the second team despite playing in less than half of the Barnstormers' schedule. The 2012 ALPB Player of the Year hit .350 with 18 homers and 52 RBI in only 66 games. He also drew 51 walks in that span.

"I'm definitely happy for all these guys," said manager Butch Hobson. "This is a great way to cap off a championship season."

The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their eleventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
