Camden Riversharks News Release
CAMDEN, NJ -Two members of the 2014 Camden Riversharks have been selected as members of the end of the year Atlantic League All-Star teams, which were announced by the league this afternoon. Infielder Bryan Pounds was named to the First Team All-Stars, while infielder Jose Julio-Ruiz was selected as a member of the Second Team All-Star squad.
"Each season it seems as if the quality of our All Star team gets better," said Joe Klein, Executive Director of the Atlantic League. "We are proud of the quality of play in the Atlantic League and feel the quality of play is increasing each season. The 2014 All Star team is an example of what I mean, the league is quite proud of them."
Pounds, in his first season in the Atlantic League, hit a team-leading 16 homeruns and 70 runs batted in, both career highs. Pounds not only led the team in these categories but also in hits (136), runs (72), and triples (11). Pounds finished third on the team in batting average at .283.
Pounds was recognized at the utility position in the First Team All-Stars due to his versatility in the field. This season, Pounds started games at shortstop, third base, and first base.
Pounds also represented the Riversharks in the 2014 Atlantic League All-Star game, where he was the lone player to hit a homerun in the game. Prior to joining the Riversharks, Pounds spent five seasons as a member of the Detroit Tigers organization, reaching their AAA ball club during two separate seasons.
Julio-Ruiz joined the Riversharks at the end of May from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. In 99 games with the "ËSharks, Julio-Ruiz led the team in batting average (.308), OPS (.853), and doubles (23). He was second to only Pounds in homeruns and runs batted in with 15 and 66, respectively.
Before playing for the Riversharks, the 29-year old was a member of the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays organizations.
