Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Ca.---Colorado Springs Sky Sox (67-75) left-handed starter Nick Schmidt (5-3) worked 6 2/3 innings en route to a 4-2 win over the Fresno Grizzlies (67-75) in the penultimate game for each team in 2013. Schmidt issued seven hits, one run (earned); he walked three, and struck out four.
The Grizzlies jumped on the board first--in the first courtesy of a two-out double to left-center field by first baseman Chris Dominguez. That scored shortstop Ehire Adrianza who had singled with one out.
With the score tied at one, the Sky Sox took the lead for good. Shortstop Reid Brignac singled to right to start the rally, and that was followed with a walk by left fielder Carlos Gonzalez. Then third baseman Ryan Wheeler singled to center which drove home Brignac, and that made it 2-1 Colorado Springs.
The Sky Sox extended the lead in the sixth inning on a two-out homer by first baseman Ben Paulsen (18).
Down 4-1, Fresno tightened things to 4-2 on a two-out single to right by second baseman Nick Noonan who scored left fielder Francisco Peguero who had doubled to start the inning.
Fresno had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning but Adrianza lined out to left, which ended the contest.
Grizzlies right-handed starter Justin Fitzgerald (2-8) in defeat lasted seven innings. He allowed six hits, three runs (all earned); he walked one, struck out three, and gave up one homer.
Logan Kensing (15), the right-hander earned the save for Colorado Springs.
The final game of the season for these teams will be on Monday afternoon at Chukchansi Park with a 1:05 first pitch. Right-hander Armando Galarraga (0-2) will start for Colorado Springs against Fresno right-handed starter Mitch Lively (7-5).
GRIZZLIES PAWS: Fresno played its final night game of 2013; they were 59-62 under the lights.
