Iowa Cubs News Release
Nashville, TN - Hainley Statia jumped over the wall in left field and robbed what would've been a two-run homer by Greg Rohan in the ninth inning, preserving the Nashville Sounds' (57-87) 2-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs (66-78) in the season finale at Greer Stadium today. The Sounds won three of four in the series, but the Cubs won the season series 9-7.
The Sounds scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning against Cubs' starter Kyle Hendricks. With one out and a man on first, Eugenio Velez hit a one-hopper right back to Hendricks on the mound. The Cubs got a force out at second base, but the ball slipped out of the hands of Edwin Maysonet as he went to throw to first, allowing Velez to reach on a fielders' choice. Hunter Morris followed with a home run to left field to get the Sounds on the board. Morris finished second in the league with 24 homers on the year. Hendricks (3-1) worked through six innings and recorded his fifth quality start in six games with Iowa.
Sounds' starter Aaron Laffey allowed four hits, but induced two double play balls to keep the Cubs scoreless through three innings. Tim Dillard followed with three innings in relief and allowed one hit, a solo home run by TIm Torres, in the fifth inning. Johnnie Lowe added two scoreless innings to set up Jesus Sanchez for a save opportunity in the ninth.
Sanchez issued a leadoff walk to Mike Olt and recorded a strikeout before Rohan came up. Rohan, who hit the game-winning homer for the Cubs in the 10th inning last night, hit a towering drive to left. Statia got back to the wall, timed his leap, and caught the ball over the top of the outfield wall for the second out of the inning. Sanchez got Luis Flores to ground out to end the game and earned his seventh save of the season. Dillard (4-2) was credited with the win.
The Cubs finished in third place in the Pacific Coast League's American Northern Division, four games behind the Omaha Storm Chasers, who clinched the division title today with their home win over Round Rock and Memphis' loss at Oklahoma City. The Cubs will open the 2014 season on Thursday, April 3 at home against the Memphis Redbirds.
The Iowa Cubs thank our fans, sponsors, and media partners for a great season.
