New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Bowie, MD- John-Ford Griffin, Mike Snyder and Dominic Rich all hit fourth inning home runs, and reliever Jamie Vermilyea tossed 3 2/3 perfect relief innings in his Eastern League debut to earn a save as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats defeated the Bowie Baysox 8-2 Tuesday night at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, MD. Left-hander Gustavo Chacin (6-2) had his best start in over a month, notching the win after allowing two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.
New Hampshire (37-32) hit a club record four homers in the game, including Anton French's lead-off long ball in the top of the first inning against losing pitcher Dave Crouthers (5-3). Crouthers also issued the three fourth-inning blasts, including back-to-back jacks to Griffin and Snyder.
French (3-for-5, 2 RBI) established a team record with hits in five consecutive at-bats, dating back to Sunday. Griffin (3-for-5, 2 RBI) tied Justin Singleton for the team lead in home runs (9), and his 36 RBIs pace the Fishers as well. Singleton (2-for-4, 2 RBI) hit his Eastern League-leading 7th triple, scoring Rich and Danny Solano in the sixth inning.
Bowie (37-34) scored on Jose Morban's grounder to second base in the third inning that was ruled an error on Dominic Rich, allowing Ed Rogers to score from third base. Keith Reed hit his 7th home run of the year in the bottom of the sixth inning off Chacin. That would be the last Baysox hit, as New Hampshire tied a club mark by holding the opponent to three hits.
Vermilyea retired all 10 batters he faced in relief of Chacin, and none of the Bowie batters hit the ball out of the infield. The Blue Jays ninth-round draft pick last June was appearing in his first game since being promoted from Single-A Dunedin earlier in the day to replace pitcher Adam Peterson. Peterson was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays, becoming the first Fisher Cat to earn that distinction.
The Fisher Cats kept pace with victorious Binghamton, remaining in second place, five games behind the front-running Mets in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
New Hampshire and Bowie meet in game three of this week's four-game series Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Right-hander Todd Ozias (6-3, 3.05) takes the mound for the Fisher Cats against Bowie right-hander Brian Finch (2-5, 7.43). Coverage of the game begins at 6:35pm on the WKXL Fisher Cats Radio Network, available on-line at http://www.fishercatsradio.com/.
