Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of left-handed pitcher Fabian Williamson and infielder Kaohi Downing.
Williamson, 23, played last season in the Oakland Athletics organization with Advanced-A Stockton of the California League and Double-A Midland of the Texas League. In 22 games between the two teams, which included 12 starts, Williamson went 3-6 with a 7.16 ERA.
"We like to have a balance in our rotation. Right now we have three right-handers and one left-hander, so this evens it out by adding another left-hander," Forney said. "We're hopeful he can come in and earn a spot in the rotation. We expect big things from him."
A highly touted prospect after being drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 22nd round (651st overall), Williamson was traded by Seattle to the Boston Red Sox in 2009 for David Aardsma. In 2010, he was flipped to the A's for Major Leaguer Eric Patterson.
In 103 professional appearances, including 75 starts, Williamson has a 32-21 record and 4.04 ERA.
Downing, 25, is coming off his first season as a position player after starting his career in the San Francisco Giants system as a pitcher. In 52 games with Short Season-A Salem-Keizer of the Northwest League last season, Downing hit .312 with a home run, 19 RBI and 11 stolen bases. He also appeared in three games with Triple-A Fresno of the Pacific Coast League.
"He's an athlete and comes highly recommended from our pitching coach last year, Brendan Sagara," Forney said. "He could wear many hats for us. He can pitch out of the bullpen or play in the infield. He has a lot of value for us."
The Goldeyes now have 26 players signed for the 2012 season, including 13 pitchers and 13 position players.
Off the field, version 2.0 of the Winnipeg Goldeyes iPhone app is now available for download for free in the iTunes Store. The updated version has a new, sleek look with information about tickets, the Goldeyes schedule and news and social media links, amongst other great features.
