Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts re-signed veteran outfielder Mike Conroy on Tuesday.
Conroy and his diverse skill set played a major role in the Wingnuts' run to the playoffs last season. The stalwart outfielder hit .301 with 66 runs scored, 23 doubles, 10 triples, one home run, and 48 RBI. Conroy totaled a career-high 116 base hits, added 42 walks, and stole 16 bases in 20 attempts. A left-handed batter and fielder, Conroy started 99 of the Wingnuts' 100 regular season games, and finished the season with a .380 on-base percentage and a .422 slugging percentage. Conroy ranked fourth in the American Association in triples, and ninth in outfield assists with nine. The 29-year-old hit safely in 74 of 99 games, and collected multiple hits in 31 of them. From May 29th-June 14th, Conroy assembled a 16-game hitting streak in which he was 24 for 55 (.436).
"Mike is a valuable piece to our success with all the intangibles he brings to the table," said Wingnuts' manager Kevin Hooper. "He leaves everything he has on the diamond night in and night out. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I would take 22 Mike Conroy's on my team any day!"
In 10 professional seasons, Conroy is a .263 hitter in 3,003 at bats over 824 games played. The Weymouth, MA native has averaged 85 runs scored, 155 base hits, 26 doubles, 11 triples, 10 home runs, 82 RBI, 15 stolen bases, 59 walks, and 12 outfield assists per 162 games during his career. Conroy currently ranks second on the American Association's all-time triples list with 22--one shy of the league record that he briefly held himself last year.
A former first round draft pick, Conroy was selected by the Cleveland Indians in 2001 out of Boston College High School in Dorchester, MA. Conroy spent six years in the Indians' organization before joining the University of Connecticut's football team as a wide receiver in 2007. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Conroy returned to baseball in 2008, and has served as the Hitting Coach for the University of Massachusetts-Boston each of the last two springs.
The Wingnuts also traded outfielder Josh Workman to the Frontier League's River City Rascals in exchange for a player to be named later.
The Wingnuts now have 21 players under contract for the 2012 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during Spring Training, which begins May 5th.
