Fish Flounder against Explorers

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes didn't get started, couldn't muster anything along the way and finished with a whimper.
That's a pretty good recipe for a second straight defeat.
Wednesday night in front of 5,788 at Shaw Park, the Sioux City Explorers scored seven runs against starter Matt Jackson and cruised to a 9-2 win over the Goldeyes.
It was Winnipeg's second straight loss and it dropped the Fish to 34-16 on the season. It also gave the Explorers a series win in this three-game set in downtown Winnipeg after winning 2-1 on Tuesday night.
"They beat us the last two days," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "The two pitchers they have at the top of their rotation, (Patrick) Johnson and (John) Straka are as good as any two pitchers in the league. They got ahead in counts and didn't give us anything to hit. They were both very good the past two days.
"We couldn't really get more aggressive against them because as good as they are, when you get overly-aggressive, it often makes for five- or six-pitch innings and that way, you don't get into their bullpen. But then again, the guys in that bullpen have been very good the past two nights as well. We'll just have to come back out tomorrow night and play better baseball."
The Explorers got a two-run homer and four runs batted in from first baseman Andres Perez, while centre fielder Tim Colwell had a two-run single as Sioux City scored twice in the third and five more times in the fourth to lock this one up early.
The Goldeyes runs came on a pair of solo homers: One in the third by Luis Alen that made the score 2-1 and one in the seventh by Ray Sadler, when Sioux City was leading 9-1.
Sioux City finished with nine runs on 16 hits, while the Goldeyes mustered only two runs on seven hits.
Sioux City starter John Straka (5-4, 3.07 ERA) got the win for the Explorers while Jackson (7-3, 3.69 ERA) suffered the loss. There was no save.
The Goldeyes and Explorers will wrap up this three-game series Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Shaw Park. Nick Hernandez (5-0, 3.88 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Greg Holt (2-7, 5.52 ERA) will take to the hill for Sioux City.
