Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The first month of the 2006 American Association Baseball season is now officially over and the Pelicans have a ton of momentum going into June. They have won eight of their last ten games and are one of the hottest teams in the league.
Pensacola started the season slowly on May 11 but broke through on May 19th with their first win of the season. Rusty Begnaud took the mound for the Pelicans against the Shreveport Sports and threw 7.1 innings of four-hit ball. Rusty turned in an impressive performance, striking out seven and giving up only one unearned run. The Pelican's offense came alive that game, scattering eleven hits and scoring six runs on the way to earning their first victory.
From that point on the Pelicans were a new team and would go on to win six games in a row, scoring 44 runs over the course of the streak, including back-to-back 11 run games against El Paso. The Pelicans have boasted two of the top hitters in the league all season with Tim Dorn and Trino Aguilar consistently hovering at or above the .400 mark. Aguilar and Dorn have lifted the offense for the Pelicans as each has had a nine or more game-hitting streak.
On the pitching front during the six game win streak, the starting staff combined for 40.1 innings and gave up one earned run for a microscopic 0.22 earned run average.
After a slow start in the new American Association, the Pelicans have jumped up four spots to 6th place in the American Association and third place in the Southern Division. Since a 5-3 loss against Shreveport ended their streak the Pelicans have played .500 ball, taking one of two from Shreveport and doing the same in their current series against Fort Worth.
Pensacola is currently 8-10 and sits in third place in the Southern Division. The Pelicans boast the best pitching staff in the league with a 3.02 team ERA through the first month of play. Six different Pelicans have picked up wins this season and eight of the 11 pitchers have ERA's at or below 3.55. Tony Pierce has the lone save for the Pelicans after the first month and has struck out 14 batters in 7.1 innings of work.
The Pelican fans are turning out in record numbers this season to root on their team as the average attendance per game is nearly 1,700 people. The team is starting to play as a unit and as long as they keep going, fans should expect the wins to keep coming.
Fans can purchase season tickets, group tickets, individual home game tickets, birthday parties, and corporate sponsorships by calling the Pelicans office at 934-8444.
