Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougar (33-17) finally got their first look at the Peoria Chiefs (27-22) and they began the first of many meetings in the near future on a good note. After this three-game set, the Cougars have two more series against the Chiefs before the end of the first half. The Midwest League's best team took game one by a score of 7-3 in front of 8,769 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Sunday evening.

Cael Brockmeyer started the Cougars' offense in the second inning when he connected on his first home run of the season to put the Cougars on top 2-0.

The Chiefs cut the Cougars lead in half with an RBI single from Michael Schulze in the third. Juan Paniagua did not allow another run the rest of his season-best outing. Walking no one for the first time in a start this year, Paniagua battled for six and one-third innings with three hits and four strikeouts.

The Cougars added to their lead in the fourth on Jordan Hankins' run scoring double. In the fifth inning, Daniel Lockhart singled to lead off the frame, stole second base, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-1 Cougars' lead.

Leading 4-1 into the eighth, more insurance did not seem as crucial as it turned out to be for the Cougars. Back-to-back singles from Ben Carhart and Yasiel Balaguert set the table for Jacob Rogers who doubled home Carhart. With runners at second and third, Hankins' second double of the night brought home two runs for the Cougars, who increased their lead 7-1.

Those extra runs came into play in the ninth, as the Chiefs struck quickly. CJ McElroy walked to begin the inning and scored on Vaughn Bryan's triple. Juan Herrera sacrificed Bryan home and Justin Ringo followed with a one-out double. Tyler Bremer closed the door on the Chiefs though, retiring the final two batters for a 7-3 Cougars' victory.

Paniagua (1-3) picked up his first win of the season. Alex Reyes (3-3) suffered the loss being charged with four runs, three earned, on six hits and seven strikeouts through six and two-third innings.

The second game of the series begins at 1:00 p.m. from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Justin Amlung (3-0, 1.75) will make his third start for the Cougars this season against Peoria's left-hander Jimmy Reed (2-1, 4.97). For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
