Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa ( May 25, 2014 ) - The Quad Cities River Bandits gave up eight runs in the top of the ninth to fall 12-4 in the finish of Wednesday's suspended game with the Burlington Bees before blowing a late lead in a 3-2 defeat in Sunday's regularly scheduled game at Community Field in Burlington.
After a power outage suspended Wednesday's game at Modern Woodmen Park, the two teams resumed the action with the score knotted at four heading to the seventh. The score stayed that way until the ninth, when Quad Cities reliever Edison Frias imploded, surrendering eight runs on seven hits in the inning, including home runs off the bat of Kody Eaves and Angel Rosa, respectively. The Bees would send 11 men to the plate and ultimately force Frias (1-3) from the game after 2.1 frames. Trevor Foss (1-3) earned the win, pitching the last 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, one walk and three hits allowed.
The River Bandits struck first in Sunday's scheduled game, with Jack Mayfield ripping a line-drive home run to left in the second inning for his second round-tripper of the season.
With one out in the third, Thomas Lindauer singled up the middle and advanced to third on a James Ramsay double that would turn out to be Quad Cities' final hit of the day. Lindauer scored to make things 2-0 on Chan-Jong Moon's sacrifice fly, which started a string of 14 consecutive batters that Burlington starter Harrison Cooney retired before exiting after the second. Cooney (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits with four punchouts in seven innings.
Burlington was able to get on the board in the fourth on Eric Aguilera's leadoff home run, his third of the year, off of Bandits starter Evan Grills.
Grills was constantly able to skirt through trouble, most notably in the sixth. He allowed back-to-back singles to leadoff the frame, but then got Exicardo Cayones to lineout to third before fanning Stephen McGee and popping up Ranyelmy Mendoza. Grills would earn a no-decision in six innings of work, pitching around six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Frederick Tiburcio came on in relief of Grills in the seventh, getting Erick Salcedo to shoot a groundball towards Lindauer at short. However, Lindauer made a poor throw to Gregor at first, allowing Salcedo to reach to lead things off. Tiburcio struck out each of the next two Bees but then walked Aguilera with two outs to set up runners on the corners. Brandon Bayardi then laced the very next pitch after Quad Cities manager Omar Lopez visited Tiburcio on the mound for a double, scoring both runners and giving Burlington a lead they would not relinquish. Tiburcio (0-1) would up striking out five in his two innings of relief.
Quad Cities had one last chance in the ninth. Cole Swanson walked both Conrad Gregor and Brett Booth with two outs. However, Burlington turned to reliever Ben Carlson, who got Mayfield to flyout to centerfield for his third save.
The River Bandits fell below .500 on the season to 24-25 while Burlington evened their record at 24-24. Quad Cities will start Adrian Houser (3-1, 3.55 ERA) tomorrow against Burlington Ryan Etsell's (3-1, 4.46).
