Kelowna Rockets News Release

The first games are in the books and the Kelowna Rockets main Western Hockey League training camp is underway in Kelowna with about 80 players ranging from veterans to young prospects taking to the ice.

Players are split into four teams and will play two games per day. For the first part of the camp several 15 and 16-year-old prospects will remain at camp before the team gets down to fewer numbers.

"We've mixed the older guys with the younger guys to start camp," said Rockets director of player personnel Lorne Frey. "We've got a lot of young guys right now. We wanted to bring them to main camp and see how they adjust."

Eighteen members of last year's team are also amongst the players looking to make the 2010-11 version of the Rockets.

"Main camp has a different feeling," said Frey who spent the previous four days watching the team's rookie camp. "The pace is a lot better."

Two more games will take place Tuesday night at 5 and 7 p.m. On Wednesday games take place at 9 and 11 a.m. and 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday there are games at 9 and 11 a.m.

With main camp now underway Frey said it's all up to making the right decisions.

"I think this is similar to a lot of our other camps,"he said. "We have a few more numbers but overall it's like any other camp, You evaluate the players and you have to make the right choices."

Kelowna opens the exhibition season with two games against Vancouver this weekend. Friday night the team's play in Ladner and Saturday they meet in Kelowna.
