Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The Firecats took off Thursday morning for their second trip to Macon of the season, but this trip had something missing.
Missing is teammate Dunstan Anderson, who was lost Monday afternoon following a car accident in southwestern Florida. The Firecats will be wearing his number 92 on their helmets, and his jersey was taken with the team. The entire arenafootball2 league will be having a moment of silence prior to kickoffs in respect for the life of Dunstan Anderson. The team plans to retire Anderson's number prior to the kickoff at their next home game on Saturday, June 12.
"It just won't seem right to look across the locker room and not see D.A. putting his pads on," quarterback Ken Mastrole said.
In respect for Anderson, the team has dedicated their season to him, hoping to stop nothing short of the 2004 ArenaCup championship.
Coming off a record-breaking night last Saturday, fullback Steve Gorrie hopes to have a repeat performance of the last Macon game, which Florida won convincingly, 58-23. When the two teams met on May 1, Gorrie ran nine times for 57 yards and three touchdowns. Gorrie currently leads the league with 229 yards rushing, and he has found the end zone eight times.
Quarterback Ken Mastrole goes into the Macon game coming off a solid game last week against Memphis. Mastrole has completed 148 of his 245 pass attempts for 1,727 yards and 42 touchdowns. Controlling the pressure will be Comone Fisher, Joe Fantigrassi, and Keith Drayton.
Heading up the lethal receiving corps will be receiver Cainon Lamb and offensive specialist Magic Benton. Lamb, who became the Firecats' all time leading scorer last week, has caught 51 balls for 441 yards and 16 touchdowns. Lamb has also ran in a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Benton has 46 receptions for 13 touchdowns and a team leading 613 yards. Other worthy targets of Mastrole are receivers Anthony Snead and Brent Burnside. Snead has 21 catches for 338 yards and nine touchdowns. Burnside has caught 22 passes for 200 yards and four scores.
In the Firecats' defensive backfield, defensive specialists Quincy Sorrell, Roy Stabler, and Desmond Washington have been steadily clicking on virtually every play from scrimmage. Sorrell is currently tied for second in the league with 44.5 tackles. Heading up the linebacker corps will be Chris Morant, Cainon Lamb, and Steve Gorrie. Morant has 18.5 tackles (four for a loss), three sacks, four pass deflections, four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked kick. Up front for the Firecats will be Comone Fisher, Keith Drayton, and Victor Hall.
Handling the kicking responsibilities will be Matt Groff.
The Firecats return home next Saturday to take on the Columbus Wardogs in the newly named Germaine Arena. Tickets are available now by calling (239) 390-2287.
