Steve Mascorro – Versatile

Laredo Law News Release

LAREDO, Texas – To play arenafootball2 you need to be versatile. A player must possess a variety of skills and talents such as intelligence, size, strength and speed. Eight games into the 2004 af2 regular season, Laredo Law offensive-defensive lineman Steve Mascorro has already demonstrated a wide range of skills and has adapted extremely well as he excels up front for the first year franchise.

The first thing you notice about Mascorro is his tremendous size, 6'5" 315-pounds. That size helps Mascorro protect Law QB Rocky Perez and also plows the way for the Law rushing attack.

"I am the biggest one in the family," said Mascorro. "My dad is about 6'1" while the uncles on my mom's side are about 6'2".

After finishing his high school career in his native El Paso, Mascorro weighed several football scholarship offers including Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico State, Texas Tech and UTEP.

"I really liked the way New Mexico State treated me," said Mascorro. "They made me feel welcome. It was also close enough so my parents could come see every home game, but I could still have my independence. I could go home easily on holidays and they could still come and see the games in Las Cruces."

Mascorro played for the Aggies from 1999-2002 and is finishing his B.A. in Human Resource Management and Leadership Management.

Raised in a border town similar to Laredo, Mascorro is bilingual.

"My parents are from Juarez, Mexico," said Mascorro. "At home we spoke Spanish, and then in school I learned English."

On the turf with the Law, Mascorro continues to expand his skills. In college he played offensive tackle, both on the left and right sides. Now playing professionally he is making the transition to center.

"Playing center has its own technique," explains Mascorro. "You can't simulate it in practice because of the speed. The only way you get better is by playing in games. It has been difficult at times, but I think I am adapting well."

Mascorro is more than adapting, he is thriving.

"Steve has been one of our best linemen," said Law line coach Jim Beverly. "He works extremely hard. He listens to coaching and strives to improve daily. He has made tremendous strides in moving to center. I would put him up against anyone in the league."

Being able to play every position on the line will benefit Mascorro as he looks to move up the pro football ladder. In fact making the move to center was one of the reasons he joined the Law.

"I came here to make the transition to center," said Mascorro. "Coach Maynard (the Law head coach) told me he was going to give me a chance to play center. It was one of the main reasons I came to Laredo. It definitely makes a player more valuable to be versatile and able to play all the positions on the line."
