FLORIDA FIRECATS (5-3) AT MACON KNIGHTS (2-6)
FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2004 - MACON COLISEUM (7,182) 7:30 P.M. ET
The Florida Firecats head to Macon with heavy hearts this week after losing teammate Dunstan Anderson to an automobile accident on Monday afternoon. In memory of Anderson, all af2 teams this weekend will hold a moment of silence prior to kickoff. The Firecats will honor their late teammate by retiring his jersey next week when they return home. They will also wear a sticker with Anderson's No. 92 on their helmets the rest of the season. As the Firecats try to carry on their season, head coach Ben Bennett has said it would be a further honor to Anderson to win the ArenaCup Championship. They'll begin on that march Friday night by trying to defeat the defending American Conference Championship Macon Knights. Offensively for the Firecats, FB/LB STEVE GORRIE leads the af2 in rushing yards with 229. He has 79 more yards than the second leading rusher in the league, Bossier-Shreveport quarterback Sherard Poteete. Gorrie already holds the Firecats team record for most rushing yards in a season with only half the season gone. He also makes plays on defense, recording 15.5 tackles (11UA 9A), one sack, four pass breakups and one recovered fumble. The leader of the Firecats defense though is QUINCY SORRELL. The defensive specialist from Nicholls State has 44.5 tackles on the season, tied for second in the af2, along with seven pass breakups and one forced fumble. Along with the rushing threat of Gorrie, the Knights will need to look out for the Firecats' double threat of receivers in CAINON LAMB and MAGIC BENTON. Lamb has 51 catches for 501 yards and sixteen touchdowns while Benton has 46 catches for 613 yards and thirteen touchdowns. Macon has a duo of receivers of their own in JAMAAL GARMAN and MIACAH COOPER. Jamal has 52 catches for 638 yards and thirteen touchdowns while Cooper has 38 catches for 467 with six catches in only six games. These teams last played each other on May 1, where the Firecats cruised to a 58-23 win. They meet one more time this season on June 26 at TECO Arena.
