The Wolves face a formidable foe ahead in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, a team that boasts one of the best records in the league at 6-2. The Pioneers are currently the No. 3-ranked team in the arenafootball2 league, as voted on in the most recent weekly af2 Coaches' Poll. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton boasts one of the stronger defenses in the league, ranking among the af2's best in scoring defense (8th - 40.1 ppg) and total defense (5th - 215.4). Defensive specialists Kyle Grove and Jamie Hattley have helped the Pioneers tremendously in that department. Grove is currently ranked 1st in the af2 in tackles with 48, while Hattley is ranked 4th with 42.5. Lineman Ufouma Pela is another name to watch for as well. Pela is tied for second in the league in tackles for loss with 6.5. On offense, QB Tim Hicks leads the Pioneer attack with 1,713 yards passing and 35 touchdowns and a passer rating among the league leaders at 112.7.
The Wolves are led by quarterback Chris Sanders, who has been in a groove in recent weeks. In the Wolves last four games, Sanders has thrown 22 touchdowns with no interceptions. In last week's win against Green Bay, the veteran signal caller was in top form, breaking two franchise records, including most yards passing in one game (396) and most pass completions in one game (26). Veteran WR/DB George Williams has been Sanders' main target this season, catching 64 passes for 829 yards and 16 touchdowns. Rookie WR/DB Reggie Robinson has also been a primary target, ranking second on the squad in receiving with 34 catches for 418 yards and nine touchdowns. Manchester will also need a stellar effort out of their defense. The action will be fierce up front as former New England Patriot Vernon Crawford is back for his third game since being activated from a wrist injury.
"We've got our work cut out for us against Wilkes-Barre that's for sure," Wolves Head Coach Rik Richards said. "They're a real strong team across the board. We need to play an inspired, mistake-free football game."
