Flint Firebirds News Release
FLINT, Mich. - Jimmy Lombardi scored his first career OHL goal and Coulson Pitre netted his 14th of the season but the Flint Firebirds allowed three unanswered goals and were beaten by the Sarnia Sting, 5-2, on Saturday night at the Dort Financial Center. Flint's losing streak grew to six games in the loss.
Flint opened the scoring early in the first period when Kaden Pitre knocked the puck free and Nolan Dann grabbed it in the neutral zone. He fired a pass to Coulson Pitre who charged in with a breakaway. Pitre carried the puck to the bottom of the left circle and pulled the trigger on a wrist shot that beat Karsen Chartier on the glove side, giving the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.
Sarnia answered with a shorthanded goal. Marko Sikic poked the puck loose in the neutral zone and ran it down for a breakaway. Sikic flicked a snap shot high past Nathan Day and the game was tied.
The Sting then took the lead after winning an attacking zone faceoff. Lukas Fischer wound up and cranked a slap shot that deflected off a Firebird on the way through. It bounced off the ice and skipped through Day, giving Sarnia a 2-1 lead.
The Firebirds answered less than 20 seconds later. Zacharie Giroux motored into the attacking zone and left the puck for Lombardi who danced between a pair of defenders. Lombardi fired a wrist shot that darted high past Chartier and the game was tied at two.
In the second, Easton Wainwright forced a turnover and carried the puck into the left-wing corner. Wainwright slid a pass across the crease to Daylen Moses. He directed a shot on net that bounced off the post, hit Day's skate and rolled in, putting Sarnia back on top, 3-2.
The Sting grabbed an insurance marker later in the period after Kai Schwindt hit a trailing Zach Filak at the blue line. Filak toe-dragged into a wrist shot that beat Day high. They added one more in the third period when Jacob LeBlanc carried the puck below the net and hit Wainwright at the back side. Wainwright steered the puck past Day, pushing the score to its 5-2 final.
Lombardi netted his first career OHL goal, Pitre extended his point streak to four games and Day made 19 saves on 24 shots. The Firebirds dropped their sixth consecutive game and moved to 13-16-2-1 in the loss while Sarnia improved to 12-19-1-0.
Flint has arrived at the OHL's holiday break and will not take the ice again for 13 days. The Firebirds next game is on Friday, December 29 in Kitchener against the Rangers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
