Firebirds Sign Jose Davis, Add Two QBs to Practice Squad

March 6, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Albany/Indiana Firebirds News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League have signed quarterback Jose Davis from the practice squad in preparation for this Monday night's match up versus the undefeated Orlando Predators. In addition, the Firebirds have added a pair of quarterbacks to their roster after signing Matt Sauk and Damian Phillips to its practice squad.

Davis (6-1, 200) was originally signed to the practice squad on January 28th before being activated to backup starting quarterback Craig Whelihan. Davis holds every career passing and total offense record at Kent State University, including total offensive yards (7,331), passing yards (6,772) and TD passes (57). He also owns the Mid-American Conference single-game records of 551 passing yards and eight total touchdowns (seven passing, one rushing). What is most impressive about Jose's records is that he accomplished them in only 26 games as a starter over a three-year period.

Sauk (6-2, 215) is in his second season in the Arena Football League after spending last season with the Los Angeles Avengers. Sauk saw limited action last year, completing 5-of-9 pass attempts for 61 yards and a touchdown while backing up starting quarterback Tony Graziani. He spent the 2001 season in af2 as a member of the Tennessee Valley Vipers. In 18 games with the Vipers, he completed 399-of-651 passes for 4,752 yards and 101 touchdowns. He also rushed for thirteen scores, making him responsible for114 total touchdowns (most ever in a single season by a player in either the AFL or af2) on his way to being named the league's Rookie of the Year.

Phillips, who was signed to the 24-man active roster for last week's meeting with Colorado, has been resigned to the team's practice squad after being released on Monday. Listed as a quarterback, Phillips caught one ball for eleven yards last week versus the Colorado Crush.

The Firebirds are back in action on Monday night when they travel to Orlando to face the Predators, who are the lone unbeaten team in the Arena Football League. All of the action can be heard on the Indiana Firebirds Radio Network, which includes ESPN Radio 950 AM (Indianapolis), WPZZ 95.9 FM (Franklin, IN), ESPN Radio 1130 AM (Brazil, IN) and ESPN Radio 1300 AM (Terre Haute, IN). The game will also be cast over the internet on www.959thepoint.com. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with the pre-game show starting at 7 p.m. The 'Birds return home next Sunday, March 16th to face the Los Angeles Avengers in the first of a two-game home stand. Tickets to that game can be purchased at the Conseco Fieldhouse Box Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets, Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at 317-239-5151 and firebirds.com.
